Peggy's Story

I've lived in Tucson since 1-25-79, & I felt like I was finally home & they won't get me out of here. I own a 4 bedroom home & live with my 3 dogs. I do a lot of community volunteer work & I'm an avid motorcyclist & You can't get me away from the TV when "RAW TV show" or "SMACKDOWN TV show" which are with the World Wrestling Entertainment industry, are on, or in town. Yeah, you heard it right I'm a motorcycle grandma who absolutely loves wrestling.(After I finally found my daughter, after looking for 30 years, wrestling is how I became very close to my 3 grand kids, especially my baby Sarah,(18 and graduates this year) who was crazy over Kane, one of the wrestlers)I went to the very next event that was held here in Tucson, and bought her a Kane mask, & thank goodness, my daughter is an excellent seamstress, she made her a Kane outfit for Halloween. I am now the longest holding patch holder of the Tucson Sunriders Motorcycle Club. (Lifetime member) What? I have been a member since 1982. Do I hear some gasps of Oh MY Gosh? Well, you asked. We are a non-profit club (not one that is called a gang) that is and has been since the late 70's, the main supporters of the Child Protective Services. We put on 3 runs (events) in January or Early February, June, and either late August or early September to raise funds to put on a weekend Toy Parade, which is held the 2nd weekend of December, Which all riders that ride in our Parade have to give a toy plus an entrance fee to ride in the parade. After we pay the expenses, some that haven't been donated, all proceeds toys and money go to the kids, so they can have a wonderful Christmas. If there is any money left over it is put into a trust for the remainder of the year in case someone needs diapers, shoes, clothes, or to fix broken windows or even a bed etc etc. We are some of the "Good Bikers". Our parade is one of the largest in the southwest part of the good old USA. The Mayor has permanently proclaimed that weekend as Sunrider Weekend. I have been divorced for 18 yrs.and I have enjoyed it but it does get a little lonely at times, because my 3 girls (critters) aren't much for conversation.(LOL) Good company & they do keep my feet warm at night but the rest of me could use some cuddling also. I know, Punk is saying "there she goes again". That's about it. How about you? I hope my old friends remember me as someone that they could turn to in time of need and always had their back. I also hope that they also remember that I didn't know a stranger & loved everyone. To this day I still don't know a stranger. I never forget a face but I'm not so good with names any more. I always wanted to be a Doctor or Dentist, but first I wanted to go into the Air force as we didn't have the money for me to go to college, when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a a lot of nonsense, as my Uncle was a full bird colonel in the Air Force and he didn't want me to go there. As it turns out, they were probably right right, as I could never passed basic training.. All my inspiration has come from my step-dad Ken Fritzler. He was and is still my hero. He stood by me when my mother wouldn't and he was always there for me when I needed him the most. It is because of him that I have this house and my car plus my faith in God. He stood by my mother through all of her illness and never left her side, even when he was fighting cancer himself. Also my sister, Carolyn who also has Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma the same as my mother and the whole time she kept working , plus taking care of Daddy Ken and my mother Betty, while she was the Head Nurse at St. Joseph's Hospital's ER in Marshfield, Wisconsin after raising her own 4 kids and putting them through College and being there for me also. Third is my Son Mario, who keeps me on the straight and narrow and has his own religious talk show on the internet. So you could say that God has Blessed me very Richly. The one person from my past who I'd most like to see again is Mary(Punkie) Pittam/Wynne, because we were so very close in High School and we only live about 120 miles apart, but we just can't seem to get together. What's the wildest thing I ever did in school, was when I was still living in Hayes Center,my sophomore year, we put a goat up on the roof of the High School, 6 of us, while a bunch of others kept the town Marshall busy elsewhere, Then we drug an old abandoned out house to the middle of main street. You have to realize that Hayes Center was a little town of 350 people. Crazy Huh? Where have I lived and why did I move? Well, I was born and raised in Hayes Center, Ne. We moved to Sidney the very end of 1962 because my Dad went to work for the Sidney National Bank. From there I moved to Aurora, Co. in 1966, when I became a flight attendant for Frontier Airlines. That didn't last very long, as I became engaged and pregnant with my daughter so I moved to Longmont,Co.to live with my dad and step-mom Arlene. My mother wouldn't let me come home, because she was an ADC social worker for the Welfare office, and she blew up and said "How would it look for her in her position, as she counseled unwed mothers". So I went to my Dad's, who literally ran off my fiance' and told him to stay out of my life. After a 10 mo. pregnancy, I went into labor and my mother showed up, and my Dad kicked me out. All the time that I was expecting my mother was working behind the scenes with the welfare office in Boulder, Co., and when my daughter was born, she sold her, so that is why it took me 30 years to find her. But all is good now.Praise the Lord. I eventually went back to Sidney and worked at the bakery, the radio station, and at an Insurance Agency. From there I moved down to Sterling, Co. where I became a disc jockey for a while, then I went to San Antonio, Tx. to help out my sister who was pregnant with her 2nd child and having a rough time. My brother-in-law was taking his residency at the base and then he was sent to Colo. Springs,Co.at the Air Force Academy where I worked for 4 Oral Surgeons and met my 1st husband, in 1969 and stayed there until we moved to Albuquerque,NM. Where we owned a car rental business and lived there until 1978 when we bought another car rental business here in Tucson and divorced in 1983. I was single but still working until 1987 when I married my 2nd husband and I moved to Sierra Vista,AZ. where he worked for the Dept. of Defense, but that only lasted until 1989 and I moved back up to Tucson and in 1990 I married my best male friend, knowing full well that he was a full blown alcoholic and that only lasted until 1992. I should have known better since my own father was an alcoholic and had committed suicide in 1988. But to this day I'm still friends with all 3 of them. It's kind of like that old song "All my ex's live in Texas" only all of mine live in AZ.and I've been single ever since. As far as sports, Reality TV, Pets,The only thing that I haven't mentioned is the reality show Dancing With The Stars, and I don't know if you'd call it a sport or not but I love to play darts and have been on several teams and was VP for 3 years running. If I could improve my home, I'd remodel my kitchen, as it only has 4 cupboards and 3 drawers and add on an AZ. room, which is an enclosed porch that is screened in, but have it where it would have enclosures that would close it off in the winter and be big enough for a spa that can be used year around and have my back yard professionally landscaped then I would be happy to stay here the rest of my life. I met my oldest friend Mary (Punkie) at school and we clicked because she is just as crazy as I am and we have kind of stayed in touch over the years, especially when my mom was still in Sidney, and boy can she cook. Then when she moved to Greeley, my Dad lived in Ft. Collins,CO. and we kept in touch by phone. then I really don't remember how I found out that she lived in Mesa but we talked the first night for a good hour and a half, but we have kept in touch through emails. My very first job outside of babysitting was in Hayes Center where I was paid something like 50 or 75 cents an hour to wait tables, do dishes, help cook in this tiny little diner. What I remember most about it was that the last night I was there, it was like 2 night before we moved to Sidney and it was during harvest time and all the harvest hands came in for dinner and I was getting $20.00 tips from most of them, but the Big Boss gave me a $100 dollar bill. Boy was I ever a happy girl. My most precious childhood memory is of my blonde cocker spaniel Chubby, that I had in Hayes Center. I couldn't hide any where in that town, because all my parents had to do was look for Chubby. He walked me to school every morning, then went bank and waited for it to be lunch time and down he'd come to get me, then back after lunch and back after school. When I was in elementary school I had the old German measles and the only thing I wanted was Chubby so Mom let him come into my bedroom and lie by my bed. 3 week to the day, he became very ill so we took him to the Vet in McCook,NE. and he couldn't figure out what was wrong with him, as he was frothing at the mouth and when he'd drink or eat, he's vomit. Finally after all kinds of blood tests and leaving him at the Vet's over night, we went back the next day and he asked if anyone had been sick in our house? That's when we all remembered that I had had the German Measles and the Vet. looked inside Chubby's mouth and sure as shootin he was covered with measles. The only bad thing about it was he lost his hearing from then on and everyone in Hayes Center knew his favorite place to wa...Expand for more
it for me was to lie in the middle of the street in front of the bank and when he was 18 years old a traveling salesman came to town and he didn't hit Chubby, but Chubby didn't hear him coming as everyone in Hayes Center always drove around him and during one of his morning jonts, he ran into the guys tire and the Marshall had to take him out and put him down. I cried for 3 days and my Mother even gave me an excuse from school and I even received sympathy cards from a lot of people in town. In the winter I have a fire in the fireplace and either watch a good movie or listen to some good music and read to blow off steam and relax. The one person from my past who I'd most like to see again is Jerry Lee Swanson, because he was my first love and we had a thing going on for a lot of years. We kept in constant contact when he was in the Navy and then he just stopped writing and I was always going down to his grand parents jewelry store to see them and his Mom and I didn't know that he was home and in he walked with another girl to pick out her engagement ring. I didn't say a thing until I got home and then I called him, & gave him 15 min. to get up to my house & he did show up & we talked for about 2 & 1/2 hrs. All this time his new fiance was outside in the car waiting on him. (Boy was she ever dumb). I gave him every reason under the sun why he shouldn't marry her as he didn't even know her but , as usual he thought he knew best & it only lasted for about 3 months. Then 3 days before I got married in Colo. Springs I was home for lunch and there was a knock on my door and you guessed it, it was Jerry & he gave me every excuse in the book as to why I shouldn't get married, the same thing I had told him years before. His marriage didn't even last but a few months and mine lasted 15 years. I did hear from him after that one class reunion that you guys had, & you sent out the little red book with all of everyone's addresses and phone numbers in it, because my Mom had sent me the form to fill out. At that time he was remarried and had a couple of kids and worked for a jeweler in Oxnard,CA. I even talked to his wife.I think his folks moved to Gerhing (sp) or somewhere up there. I know if any of you know them please have them either write to me or give me a call. I absolutely loved them to death. I know that life doesn't always turn out the way you expect but the biggest surprise to me is that being 100% disabled I have become very independent, I own my own home and car, living on a very limited income without a man!!! Hey it can be done. Yes, at times it is hard and lonely but I'm not complaining. Just wishful thinking that I might become the next lottery winner, when I don't play or find Mr. Perfect when I very seldom go out except for my club meetings or volunteer work. I spend a lot of time on my computer and with my dogs. What more could a lady ask for? And diamonds aren't a girls best friend as far as I'm concerned. Living life with our Lord with us is all we need. I have a roof over my head, food for me and my dogs, and a leisurely life, with great expectations of finding someone to share it with. If I won a $100 million, I'd give my son $2 million so he could start his own business or however much he needed. I'd give my daughter the same amount so she could do what ever she wanted to do like she wants to move down here, that's why I bought a 4 bedroom house so she and my granddaughter could live with me but this way she could buy her own house and finish her schooling. Then of course each of my 3 biological grand kids would each get a certain amount. P.J. who is the oldest 23, is about to graduate from the Denver Police Academy. Jon, 22 is about to start in the Denver Fire Academy. And Sarah who is 18 and will be graduating from High School this year, could go to any college she wanted. then the rest I'd do all of the remodeling on my house and yard and probably get another car and instead of my motorcycle, which I can't ride anymore after the car accident because I can't trust my left leg to hold me up I'd get me a new Trike. And of course I'd donate a large sum to several different charities and put the rest in investments. Do I still dress like I did 10-20 years ago? Heck no. It's Wranglers and T-shirts and leathers for winter and shorts and a top in the summer. You have to realize that even though Tucson is over 7 million people it is still a little country town. We lost our only 5 star restaurant we had and you can go just about anywhere in Levi's and there are some places that if you wear a tie they will cut it off and hang it from the rafters. No Joke. If I had one do-over it would be to NOT listen to my folks and I never would have lost my daughter for those 30 years. In 10 years, I hope to be right here, healthy, happy, content and not alone. I'm going to get there by the power of prayer and by putting it in God's hands. I also hope my daughter is down here and maybe even my grand children. I think the one thing that would surprise everyone at the reunion is how peaceful and finally letting my religious side show. It has always been there, but I always kept it hidden and for what I cannot tell you. But I'll bet my cousin Bob Fry couldn't tell you either because he was so shy and he became a missionary. I Love you cuz. I just recently found out that I had had a silent heart attack, but they don't know when. I went to the Cardiologist Wednesday (06-17-09) & he checked me out & put a holter monitor on me & if I did, it surely would have showed something as I have never been under so much stress as I was that 24 hrs. Not much else to tell you all but that I'm still kicking and loving life. I only hope that all of you are doing the same. Just a quick update to let everyone know that I didn't have a heart attack or a torn mitral valve. I have what the Doc called "regurge", which as he explained it is like a house with 4 doors in it & one of the doors either isn't opening all the way or closing all the way, causing a backsplash. I looked at him in a very serious face & I said" you mean my heart is up chucking?" He turned around & he looked at me & being the smart a** that I can be when I want to he saw the twinkle in my eyes & the beginning of a smile & we both broke out laughing at the same time. He was still laughing as he left the room saying "up-chucking" & then he said over his shoulder, that if I don't have any more problems that he's see me in 2 years. What can I say I DO still have a little of the old Hell in me yet!!!!! Well, if you could call it sports, or sports entertainment it would have to be wrestling, Reality TV shows would definitely have to be Dancing with the Stars. You already know about my pets. And as far as obsessions, it would have to be all three of the above and my children and grand children. As a parent, what I have learned that is a difficult question, as I have been married 3 times and in total I have 11 children with 9 of them being step-children and I raised all but 2 of them. I also have a total of 19 grand children, 3 biological and the rest step. And I have 3 great grand children. Whew, I'd have to say that I have learned patience, and how to hold my cool.I also learned that you don't have to give birth to a child to love them just as much as you do the ones you do give birth to. As far as which teachers I'd like to see again, I have 3, and I don't even know if they are still with us. First would be Mr Lewis, my typing teacher that always walked around with his ruler in his hands and smacked you on your wrists if you weren't holding them up. He did teach me to type an average of 120 wpm though. Second would be Mr. Paul Sheaman, and third, would have to be Mr. Sidney Phelps, as he was such an inspiration to me in both band and chorus. My current age is 63. When I was 12, I thought that people my age now would be"older than dirt". I was so completely clueless. What happened to my first crush? Huh!! Gayle, do you want to answer that? Of course he was every NEW girls first crush!!! Am I right or wrong Jerry Cronk? My best friend would tell you that I'm crazy, weird, silly, unpredictable, but people that who don't know me very well would probably describe me as kind, always smiling, always ready to give a helping hand and always (like Gayle) very friendly to any new people, only mine were usually girls. What's the weirdest job I've ever had? Well, none of them were really weird just a lot of different kinds. I was a Dental Assistant, a waitress, disc jockey, Flight Attendant,Insurance Underwriter and sales person, car racer,( that's probably the weirdest)Nurse, Certified Counselor for Rural Public Health Dept.,My first husband and I owned a car rental place in Albuquerque and I did everything from cleaning them out to renting them to jockeying them from city to city.,played in a dance band and sang also, was Past President of the Homeowner's Association.(granted it is volunteer, but boy was it ever work). I have trophies on my mantel, rather in my office and share a big victory with my teams for my Dart Teams. To be truly happy, I'd be right here only I'd finally have a MR. RIGHT. Someone that had similar interests as I do, and someone to live out the twilight years of my life.No life doesn't always turn out the way you expect, but to my surprise, I've learned to not only like, but love myself and I even enjoy myself, but I'd rather be WITH someone to live out my life with. I do think that a 18 year hiatus has been long enough, but whether or not they could put up with someone that is very set in their ways, I sure can hope and Pray can't I?
