Penny Francis's Story

Life After high school I moved to Virginia and to the Washington DC area. I took some college courses and worked at a Vet clinic. I met and married David from the Naval Academy (Annapolis, MD). We lived in Springfield VA (outside DC). We had a daughter, Charity('82); a son, Seth('85); and a son, Micah('86). When we divorced went to Longood University in VA and received a BA in English and a teaching degree. I have since taught grades 2,3,5,6,7,8,and 9 at one point or another. I will say one thing about that..... it is not like it was when we were kids! Like you don't know that. Sound like our parents and grandparents now don't I. I visit Tucson every few years. My dad is still there, though Francis Auto Parts is long gone. My daughter is completing a BS in nursing at James Madison University in VA. My oldest son works for Applebee's, My youngest son is finishing high school and playing basketball. My son's range from 6'7" and 6'9" tall. So somebody had to play basketball. People kept saying,"It's such a waste". All of my kids go on missions trips to work in orphanages, help people and build churches in the US and other countries. They love it. They have been to Mexico, Germany, Ukraine, inner city Baltimore, and to the mountains of Kentucky. We have been hosting an exchange student from South Korea this year. We just returned from a trip with all the international students in this program. We went to Philadelphia (former home of Ben Franklin and Betsy Ross) and New York City (seeing Statue of Liberty, Times Square, Empire State Building) Our first time there except passing through. I loved the view from the harbor, especially the statue and Ellis Island. Some students saw Jeff Goldblum and Denzel Washington near the Broadway Theatres. It was great fun. I love history and Virginia is, of course, full of it. It is also very green and you don't have to water your grass or trees! When you put a seed in the ground it grows! Virginia has a beach! Yes, they did not emphasize geography at Sunnyside, or if they did I blinked and missed it. Anyway, I never compare Arizona to Virginia because they are apples and oranges. Most places have their good points. High School definately wasn't my favorite time in life, but it was only 4 years so I am glad. Without the downs the ups wouldn't seem so high! Best Wishes to all my former classmates from Elvira to Sunnyside! School I was really sorry to hear that Roy Fontenot passed away. I had a sort crush on him in high school. I thought he was the sweetest guy. When so many guys were trying to be cool, he was just easy going and sweet all the time. He was so refreshing! We were just friends. He was my lab partner in Biology and we laughed and joked around a lot. I also had a crush on Gary Dykman for a long time because of similar reasons. He always seemed so different. He was kind of quiet and shy. I made a...Expand for more
n idiot out of myself in front of him. I won't go there. I will say that most anyone I thought was really sweet didn't seem as nice by the time high school finished with them. Everyone was definately in a hurry to "grow up" whatever they considered that to be. Though kids start earlier with all that now, times weren't innocent then either. I preferred some innocent fun myself. Plenty of time to learn the rest. The teacher who inspired me the most was Mr. Pirtle. Walking into the photography lab in the back of the library was like entering another world. It was a relief just to be there. Mr. Pirtle always said "Hello Penny Lane", as soon as I walked in. Which added to the whole fantasy. I stepped into that Beatles song when I stepped into that lab. I got my camera and took off to see the campas or the town through different eyes. I was very happy that, though not credited, many of my photos made it into the yearbook... 1977 I think. yeah that one! Another of my favorite teachers I can picture in my mind, but I am never sure of his name. I think it is Mr. Murray. I loved his Social Studies class! He lectured the entire time and everyone complained about it, but I was in heaven! The class was on Chinese and Japanese history. He knew everything about that! He had been there and studied it all. I remembered him teaching about the different warriors and rulers. It was really more of a college level class. The University would have appreciated him! My happiest high school memory was when I gave my dad some money I had and asked him to help find me a car. I wasn't expecting much for the money, but I really wanted an old Mustang. One evening when I got home from work. My family was waiting in the garage with a fantastic 1968 Mustang. I didn't know it was mine, but just ran around gushing about my Dad's latest discovery. I asked if I could drive it sometime and he said of course because it was mine. I thought I would have a heart attack. I cried and screamed and couldn't leave the garage all evening. He had offered a lady in a parking lot 900.00 for it and she sold it on the spot! It was a white fastback with a red C-stripe and a two-tone blue interior. I kept that car until 1987. By that time we were towing it! I sold it for 1,000.00. I wish I had kept that car! That night meant a lot to me because we were not an extravagant family. That was a fairy tale night. Yes, I do like to talk, but I am not writing all of this for my health. I am doing it because I have wondered why people don't put more into their profiles. It has been almost 30 years! I think people should tell the stuff they wouldn't dare say in high school, at the risk of seeming uncool! We should all be over it by now! right! Well, I can't say that if I won't do it myself. Let's get over high school, after all in a few years we could be dead! lol That's not really funny, some of us already are.
