Peter's Story

You may remember me as Peter Dickson, my real name was Alley, I changed it for graduation . I joined the Army in 1983 after a short time at UNM. Went to Basic Training at Ft Benning, Ga. I Wanted to be an Airborne Ranger. The Army sent me to a Scout Platoon in CSC 4th /327 Inf. in Alaska 83-85, cross country skiing and snow shoes all the time (w/arctic ruck) thought I’d die that first year! Then I was off to the 101st Airborne Div. as Team Leader in Bravo Co . 1st/327th Infantry. Here I attended Air Assault School (rappelling out of helicopters ), and deployed to Jungle Warfare school Ft. Sherman, Panama. (Fun time) Got out in 1986-tried UNM again…1987 back in Army, this time with a wife. 1987, Ft. Lewis , Washington 9th Infantry Div. ,(Motorized ) in the woods all the time , became a Squad leader in “Mung Ho” Bn., deployed to Sinai, Egypt, at which time my daughter was born. Then in 1989 went to Special Forces Selection, 21 days hell, I was selected. Was sent to airborne school.parachuting (Graduated) no more being a nasty leg! Next up 1991, 25th Light Infantry Division, Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. A Co. 4/22 , in the bush all the time (I hate centipedes). deployed to Japan to train Japanese soldiers in annual exercises. Back to (Hawaii ) voluntered for Ranger Indoctrination Program, (Rip) twice (medical out) first time, graduated second time around. Then off to Ranger School at the wonderful and beautiful Ft. Benning, Ga , late spring 1993, I was a day one recycle, Spent 21 days in Gulag, then the next class started. 69 days of stress a fatigue, I finally received my Ranger Tab, class 7-93. Time for Ft. Leonardwood, Mo. Time for a break, Range Control , divorce # 1 left Army 1996 for Quincey, Ma. enroute to work as manager for Thrift Store, then to Providence, RI, to run a shipping and receiving for our stores in Texas. 1998, Off to Austin,Texas, opened new store, stayed for a couple years. b at Savers Thrift store, they sent me to Lakewood, (Denver) Co. Went into NG, 19th SF Group. In Watkins, Co. After a couple more jumps onto HWY 1 , Oregon, Left unit for NM. Guard, deployed to Iraq in 2006. Home in 07 , spent 6 months in Iraq, I was very lucky. Guard sent me to Military Police School, you can’t spell wimp without MP, I hated it but I graduated . Divorced # (2) Stayed on full time as a Readiness NCO, and married my current wife #3 for the past 14 years. Deployed to Kosovo in 2010. The soldiers we have today are much stronger and tougher, it was getting hard to keep up with them, but I did , for awhile, then it was time to retire this old Lifer. People wonder way I chose this life, I think the Army was the only place that would take a hard partying alcoholic … I quit drinking in 2012. Best thing I ever did, I feel so much better every day now. A lot of people and places , forget names and memories faded. Retired SFC, Oct. 2010. Still live in Abq. life’s good, 2016 attended Ritual of Catholic indoctrination of Adults, (RCIA) to become a Catholic. Easter 2017 I became Catholic. Have not attended church since before COVID outbreak, I’ve been exploring meditation and yoga. COVID era hit- I started gardening, raising chickens, have two dogs, landscaping and hanging in my hammock. Trying to make up lost time. Gave daughter away at her wedding in Orlando, Fl. 2021. That’s me and her in photo I posted. Well enough for now, was not sure what to write, please excuse grammatical errors. I hope everyone is happy and well. On 12 November 2023 my wife Yolanda, passed away. 26 March 2024, Life is getting bearable again, looking forward to summer time. Stopped coffee about 4 months ago, I now drink tea,I feel great, I also pretty much stopped eating since my wife passed. I hope to be at High School weight by this coming summer! Ha, that would be great! Soon it will be time to spend all day outside in my garden. I look forward to hearing from some old friends…anybody out there remember me?
