Peter's Story

Currently in Russia. Been here for 10 years now, exploring the Russian Far East for gold and silver, with three Canadian-based companies. Currently with Kinross Gold Corp - looking for "the next big one" in Chukotka - basicaly right across from Alaska (tried waving to Sarah Palin - I don't think she saw me). It's been quite an adventure here working in the Russian Arctic. We try to work year round up here but when it's -50C with huricane force winds it's time to take the hint from Mother Nature and take a break. As for my Russian language skills, well, coming along I guess. First encounter with the language was in university at UBC, while working on my B.Sc. in Geology. At the time I had no idea I would ever end up here (was still the USSR back then, but the...Expand for more
man in charge at the time - Gorbachev, was about to unleash changes that basically ended the Cold War and allowed me to be here today). The grammar is complex but the Russians like to borrow lots of words from other languages, which makes it a bit easier (say "hotdog" or "hockey" and they understand). As for the Russian people, well, they have embraced capitalism in a big way - there is no turning back - money talks here in Russia - everyone is trying to make a buck (sorry, meant to say Ruble). And they are doing there best to go "hitech" - everyone here - yes, even the kids - have cell phones (they don't pay the crazy rates for cell plans that we pay in Canada - and incoming calls are all free!!!). Well, back to the hunt for 'the next big one", it's out there.....
