Okay, so I turned 50 this last birthday. Some would say "Big Deal", but what happened? Somewhere, sometime in the not so distant past, I've come "out of the bubble". If you knew me before I joined the military, you would see the differences, some subtle, some not. Was it getting married, or becoming a Dad at 46? I dunno, friends. I woke up from my dream in February, when I found myself married with children, and in N. TX. I was no longer in the Northeast, and haven't heard a familiar dialect in over two decades.
TRUE CONFESSION: I was so anxious and nervous through my growing up, I wonder if some of my friends are imaginary today. Whatever happened to Cecil Williams, or the Sutton kid I ran around with acting like Batman with? I have come out of the clouds, and landed in a world that has changed, and I feel like a time-traveller. Does this happen with everyone that retires after 20+ years in the military?
TODAY, I was chasing my boy around the backyard with a water hose. Each time the spray of water hit him, he squealed with delight. My wife is in Austin, playing accompaniment t...Expand for more
o some kids at their UIL State competitions. She looks more beautiful to me today then she did when we were married in 2003. Life is weird, in some ways. I never in my wildest dreams thought I'd be 50, unemployed, on Foodstamps, and wondering what I've done wrong. The military didn't end the way it was supposed to, Unemployment is finally straight, but all of the investments are gone, because somewhere in the last few months of the military, everything went wrong. Either that, or the drugs the VA has me on have, well, altered reality. (Chuckles) I have two sayings: G-d Provides, and Triumph through Adversity. My beloved admires my depth of Faith. Did y'all know that when we were growing up together, you and I forged something that has withstood life through all of those ex-girlfriends, ex-careers, and just plain WEIRD stuff? Ah, I am ranting.
How would I hope that my old friends remember me?
Batman capes from beach towels? Laughing about goofy stuff. Like Dr. Barrett's puns? The surprised look on everyone's faces when I got choked out in Judo class? Hmmm...
I'd rather you remember that I was your most loyal friend, even if my glasses looked like coke-bottle bottoms, or I had a dorky smile. I'd hope you remember that when the world wouldn't listen to you, I did. I want you to remember the back-rub that felt "Oh, sooooo good". Late night sitting on a table in the dorm lounge studying like crazy. You DON"T have to remind me that I wasn't putting forth any effort in College classes, or Advancement exams - my parents did that two months ago. I must have touched your soul in some way, in some manner, thaat has given cause for you to find this... here. You can forgive me the slights and jibes that made you angry, or bitter... I have. And I have moved on into my second half Century. Thanks, my old friend, aquaintance, love, whatever you were. Let's do something that I learned from a season with Busch Gardens Williamsburg - make it Safe, Easy, Quality, and Memorable. Thanks for "hunting me down, this year. I hope we can make it worthwhile. I missed something before...
