Peter's Story
Life
I think often about friends I moved away from, about how they are and what they are doing. Tom x 2, Phil, Michelle, Sue, Karen, Joe, George, Tim, Herb, Milt, Steve, Danny, Cindy, Bill, Lisa, Mike, and more I don't list.
I lived in Houston from 84 to 96, working in the oil business (geologist), and firefighting (captain). While there I had the good fortune (and good sense) to reconnect with a wonderful best friend, and even explore possibilities. Wasn't to be. Left Texas to do volunteer work with a humanitarian agency that does medical work in 3rd world war zones. Was with them for six years. I specialized as a manager of emergency programs in unstable Islamic areas, and on Sept 11, 2001 I was in Somalia, in a town north of Mogadishu. My liaison in Nairobi Kenya told me to watch the news asap, so via sattv I watched the towers go down. The team I managed consisted of various Europeans and Africans so I felt no immediate risk and we continued work. The locals thought I was Canadian. Lots of Osama posters and firing into the air, and life went on for a few days. Rumors in the town about Somalis in Europe being beaten on the streets led me to evacuate everyone. d to the States, spent a year giving interviews and presentations about human rights, and recruiting and training new recruits for humanitarian aid agencies. Later I became the director of a Los Angeles charity devoted to tutoring and supporting homeless children. After that, I spent a year variously working in a pool hall (playing tournaments and giving lessons), going on long motorcycle trips with a sleeping bag, tent, and a bunch of books, and substitute teaching. In the last 18 months I went back to school to get my California teaching credential, and beginning this fall I will be a high school science teacher at Hueneme High School in Oxnard, California. I suppose there's justice in this--- I expect my students to be a pain in the ass just as I was to the teachers at GCHS.
July 2008 update: I am now a science teacher at Hueneme High School. I live in a one-room cottage high in the Malibu mountains, feeding the hummingbirds and riding the canyon roads on motorcycle. Hawks and coyotes, deer and rabbits. Haven't owned a tv for years, wouldn't work here, but wireless on the laptop works fine. Go figure.
2023 update
Happily narried and living in Washington State, in rural forest on the west side of Puget Sound.
Best to EVERYONE, be happy and be well!
