Peter's Story
Life
I was born in Los Angeles, California, but grew up going back and forth between the skyline of the "windy city", Chicago, and the magnolias and pine trees of Durham, North Carolina. After spening grades 4-9 in Chicago I retured to the relative safety of North Carolina and started high school again (1967) at Palmer Memorial Institute,in Sedalia, NC graduating in 1971. I spent four years at Antioch College (1971-75) in Yellow Springs, Ohio and returned to Chicago to do community education work on the west side. I returned to NC in 1977. I received a MasterÂs degree in Public Health from UNC-Chapel Hill (1980), specializing in Health Behavior and Health Education. After six years of coordinating and providing various community public health education services I became interested in doing more to provide and improve community health care. I attended Duke University's Physician Assistant Program. Since graduating in 1988, I have practiced in a number of contrasting settings; the Los Ang...Expand for more
eles County Hospital AIDS Clinic, the Tug River Health Clinic in Northfork, West Virginia, and the Anderson Creek Clinic in Spring Lake, North Carolina. In January 2000 I joined the faculty at The University of Iowa Physician Assistant Program as the Director of Curriculum and Evaluation. I teach two courses a year and maintain a one day a week clinical practice at the UI Hospital Family Care Clinic. Prior to coming to Iowa I was the assistant director and academic coordinator of the Methodist College PA program (1995-2000)in Fayetteville, NC. While there I had the pleasure of helping found a new PA program. Through all of this I have dragged across country, or added on at various points in time, two sons (Otieno, 23, Michael, 19), a daughter (Aheri, 21), one cat (Sprite, 16) and a fantastic wife (Joyce, over 21).
My mother Edythe Scarborough Stanford, now deceased, graduated PMI in 1942 and was instrumental in my attending Palmer.I look forward to hearing from PMI alumni from any year.
