Peter's Story

Life Since graduating from Sammamish HS in '62, I have had a pretty good life so far, although like most people, I'd probably do a few things differently if I could go back in time. I attended UW from '62-'67, getting permission from the draft board in 1966 to go three more quarters in order to obtain a B.A. with a double major (History and Economics). I had hoped to attend law school in the fall of '66, but didn't score well enough in the 8-hour entrance exam (75 percentile, but since so many people applied to avoid getting drafted, you needed to be at the 90 percentile to get in.) I also worked part-time at the Seattle Times six days a week from 1963-1966, running a mail machine and delivering the incoming mail , which I really enjoyed. I was there the day JFK was assassinated (and kept the paper all these years), which I wrote about for the Vancouver Sun (published on Nov. 22, 1993 and republished on Nov. 22, 2003). After graduating in the spring of '67, I sold my beloved MG Midget and went to England, where I was born, for three months (on the S.S. United States from NYC), returning by way of Montreal, also by ship, where I spent six days at the World's Fair. I had decided to return to Canada to live and travelled across the country by train to Vancouver, after a brief visit to my old hometown, Oakville, Ontario. I've lived in B.C. ever since, becoming a highschool teacher in 1969 after working briefly in two other professions (stock market broker/probation officer), before returning to university for my teacher's certificate (S.F.U.) in 1968. I got married in 1970 to Mary Macdonald from Burnaby, BC, and we had three sons (James, David and Michael, born in '72, '74 and '77). I'm semi-retired now, and have been divorced since 1987. I have three grandsons (Taylor, born on Sept. 18, 1993; Isaak, born on Christmas Day in 2002; and Kaden, born on July 7, 2004). I also have a granddaughter named Kate Mary Louise Whitmey, born on Feb. 11, 2008. I worked for Statistics Canada as a follow-up enumerator for the 2006 census, which was an interesting experience, although at times frustrating too. Almost half of B.C.'s population did not complete the form mailed to them in May, which was, in fact, a criminal offence (subject to a possible $500 fine). I have applied to work for Statistics Canada again as an enumerator for the 2011 census. I also went to England in Oct. 2009, visiting several cousins and my uncle and aunt in South Wales, where my mother was born (her younger brother, Eric and his wife, Shirley). I particularly enjoyed Oxford, where you can hop on and off a double decker bus (the top is uncovered) as often as you want after paying for a 24-hour pass. I also saw the play "Dial M For Murder" there, which was originally a BBC televisio...Expand for more
n production in the early 1950s, and, of course, was made into a movie (in 3D) by the incomparable Alfred Hitchcok in 1954, starring Grace Kelly (the future princess of Monaco, who died tragically in the car accident while being driven by her daughter as I recall). Ray Milland played her husband and Robert Cummings her lover (he was later in a very successful situation comedy). The play had been a big success in London and was touring the country. It was terrific, as good as the movie. Btw, I'm going to England again this September. I play tennis regularly, mostly doubles, although a shoulder injury in July, 2007, reduced how often I played for awhile, but it's finally back to normal now. It's the only time in 50 years of playing the game that I've injured that part of my body. I played hockey until I was 36, followed by four years of coaching (one year coaching James's atom team and later three years coaching Mike's atom/peewee teams). I went skating a few times this winter with Isaak, and also did so with Taylor when he was younger. I also enjoy swimming, cycling and playing the guitar (I own three, one of which I bought way back in 1971), composing (13 songs written over 40 years), collecting records, reading (fiction and non-fiction) and genealogy. I've managed to trace back to my great-great-great-great-great grandparents, on my father's side, married in 1718 in Shenley, Buckinghamshire, England), but the father's christening record is not available. As his first name was Isaac, maybe he was Jewish! I have also spent a lot of years researching the JFK assassination and attended seven conferences between 1991-1999, including the first ever in Dallas, TX in 1991, and even a debate at the UW in the summer of 1994. The others took place in Fredonia, NY (2), Chicago (2), Sudbury, Ontario, and Minneapolis. I actually got to meet and talk to Marina Oswald Porter and her husband, who were special guests at the one in Sudbury (Laurentian University). I have 23 articles on the Internet at three sites (if you search under my name, you'll find them). My latest is entitled "Creating A Patsy", and is available at Prof. John McAdams' website. One of my articles entitled "Did David Ferrie Lie to the Secret Service?" was recently cited by author/professor David Kaiser in his new book entitled THE ROAD TO DALLAS, which I highly recommend. Btw, I believe Oswald was framed (why would he want LBJ to become President?). I'm looking forward to the 50th anniversary which will be in November, 2013, when there will likely be massive television and internet coverage. I hope to attend a conference in Dallas that year. - Peter R. Whitmey Abbotsford, BC April 15, 2011
