Peter's Story

I hate writing this kind of "stuff" because it all too often sounds arrogant. I'll try not to do that. My wife Kathy and I have been married 41 years now. Beyond a doubt I have been instrumental in helping her develop special talents including: patience, compassion and charity. Pretty darn good of me I think. After 15 years in Alaska we have relocated to the lower 48 states. Well to be specific we now live in New Mexico where I am the superintendent for Capulin Volcano National Monument, Since joining the National Park Service in 1992, I have served as a lead project geologist (Redwood National Park), coastal ecologist for 4 parks in Alaska, and an ocean's program coordinator in Alaska. So much for the PhD in marine toxicology now that we reside and work in New Mexico. However, I find some comfort knowing that beneath the lava flows is an ancient seabed. Anyway, thinking back to high school who would have ever thought I would have a masters let alone a doctorate. Heck, I was having way too much fun enjoying non academic pursuits back then. High school was a four year vacation for me. Spent a little time in the military and determined that educations wasn't that bad after all. I returned to college and graduated several times over. e in their lives as they are all doing well. We now have 9 grand children ranging in age from 24 months to 17 years. My God I feel old! Right now Kathy is gainfully unemployed and enjoying a life of gardening, painting the sterile white walls in our home with southwest-like colors, drafting my to-do lists and enjoying life. As she has been in education for much of her career, she could get a job if she wished but as I said earlier she is enjoying life without the headaches associated with "working." One might think the word "working" is a 4 letter word. We enjoy lots of outdoor activities. She is not much of a climber and has only been up to 10,000 feet and does not like to walk around Capulin Volcano's rim on a windy day. Heck, it is only 8,200 feet elevation. We both love to kayak. Interesting in that we live in a pretty arid part of the country. Hiking, meteorite hunting and road trips are a few of our favorite things to do. I have been a martial artist for nearly 50 years now and studied in Japan, Hong Kong, the "real" China and of course the good old USA. Kathy is my "oldest" student. I should not put it that way though. Something about age sensitivity with women. Well, there is too much to write but this is more than enough. We hope that you are in good health and enjoying life as much as we are. Best wishes to all, Peter
