Peter's Story

Peter's schools include Haddonfield Memorial High School. He later attended Princeton University. More about Peter:"In 2003 I was the General Counsel of The Clorox Company in Oakland, CA, where my wife of 31 years, Lee, and I lived. Our two sons, Pete Jr. (then 33 and the son of my deceased first wife Barbara) and Stephen (29) were both married and had children of their own. They lived, and live, in New England. Lee and I found it increasingly difficult to spend the time we wanted to with our sons and their families across the continent and to travel the way we wanted to. After much thought and discussion, I decided to retire. It took a while to get things in order, but I finally bowed out of corporate life in January of 2005. We bought a condo near Boston and split our time between the condo there and our home in Oakland. The numerous cross-country trips eventually wore us down, so we sold the Oakland house and bought in Naples, Florida, where we now spend the bulk of our time. We have seven grandsons (Lee wishes mightily for a grandaughter, but the chances at this point are remote)and we spend holidays and summers with them. After a lifetime of moving around for a better job or a better neighborhood or a better house, we've become convinced that family (and friends) are what counts. I keep stimulated with a couple of corporate boards (the WD-40 Company, a San Die...Expand for more
go based consumer products company, and Tractor Supply Company, a Nashville based niche retailer) and a couple of non-profits. We are also feeling our way with philanthropy, having created a charitable gift fund and started to chart out a giving strategy. We are doing the traveling I retired to do, and learning as we go. We plan our trips months in advance and read everything we can about where we are going. I am much more of a student today than I was as an undergraduate, because I have the time and the desire to be interested in what I am learning. Faith remains important in my life. An agnostic in college and for ten years thereafter, I became a Catholic almost 30 years ago and continue to serve my local parish and the Order of Malta in a variety of ways. I am appalled at the carnage that is wrought in the name of faith. I cannot comprehend the distorted worldview that makes one Christian (Protestant or Catholic) hate another because of his faith, or a Christian a Muslim, or a Muslim a Jew. It sometimes seems to me that, if we removed religion from our lives, we would remove one of the most significant causes of conflict among men. On the other hand (lawyers always have at least two hands) it may be that it is in the nature of man to fear and fight those outside his tribe and that men would always find something to fight about, even without religion as a catalyst.".
