Peter's Story

LifePlant International(formerly RotaPlant) Mission Statement: To sew the seeds of goodwill in developing countries by providing lifesaving living-related kidney transplantation to patients with concurrent supportive community and humanitarian aid. What is LifePlant? LifePlant is a continuing project of the Rotary Club (RC) of Novato with a strong commitment from our neighboring RC’s from Northern California (District 5150 and 5130) and RC’s in the Philippines. It is being modeled after Rotaplast and Rotavision, two medical charities, and is completely managed and operated by non-compensated volunteers. RotaPlant is the vision of Peter N. Bretan Jr., M.D., Past President of the Marin Medical Society & Clinical Associate Professor at the University of California, San Francisco, Chief and Surgical Director of Transplantation at the Northern California Kidney Transplant Center. He is a Specialist in Renal Transplantation , Renal Vascular, and Laparoscopic Surgery . Dr. Bretan has been a member of the RC of Novato since 2000 and in searching for a vehicle to facilitate his contribution to International Medical Services, found a model in Rotaplast. Rotaplast, which began as a project of the RC of San Francisco is a non-profit organization providing surgical repair of cleft palates in developing countries. LifePlant International (501(c)3 organization)is a program, which has provided living related kidney transplants to patients who would otherwise succumb to kidney disease, and will also provide concurrent humanitarian aid in the surrounding communities. The object of the project is to provide kidney transplants to needy patients at no cost to the patients. The cost of laparoscopic kidney removal is included All medical and non-medical support personnel are volunteers. Team expenses will be paid by individual team members, and they will be hosted in the Philippines ...Expand for more
by local Rotarians. Contributions from RCs and the Rotary Foundation may be used to defer some costs. Significant educational aspects are part and parcel of the RotaPlant Program. Medical doctors in developing countries will get first hand education in laparoscopic surgery and in kidney transplantation. Through Dr. Bretan’s speaking engagements related to the project, local RCs and communities will learn about organ donation and laparoscopic donor kidney surgery (currently not performed in most developing countries). In addition, humanitarian aid in the form of clothing and book donations will be transported and distributed at the time of the specific RotaPlant Mission. As a result of the site visits to Manila and Davao in September 2003, the first RotaPlant Mission was completed with great success in Mindanao, Philippines April 22, 2004, as a concerted effort of the RCs from Tagum City and Davao. Since then over 40 separate surgeries were successfully performed and 20 lives saved. ie A 22 year old woman donated a kidney to her sister , as well as a another young 27 year old Filipina donating a kidney to her brother. All surgeries are performed by the Dr Bretan and the LifePlant team. After the first mission LifePlant was awarded the prestigious Homer Wood Award for outstanding World Community Service project by Rotary International. Fundraising is continuous as the team travels every 6-12 months. Help save lives, support LifePlant. “Help save a life!” Individuals and corporate donations go entirely to equipment and medical supply expenses. Join us by direct participation (send us your E-mails for meeting times and updates), become a sustaining member (individual and/or organizations), or join us directly as a Mission Specialist.
