Peter's Story

After graduation from Mira Loma I attended the United States Military Academy at West Point, and graduated at the top of my class in 1982. I finished a 26 year career in the military in 2008, rising to the rank of colonel. I commanded a brigade combat team in Baghdad in 2003-2004, and published a memoir on that experience ("Baghdad at Sunrise: A Brigade Commander's War in Iraq"). My final assignment in the military was as executive officer to General David Petraeus, Commander of Multi-National Force-Iraq, from Feb 2007 to May 2008. After my retirement from the military in the summer of 2008, I went to the Ohio State University as the General Raymond E. Mason Chair of Military History. You can check out what I'm up to these days at the Ohio State Department of History web site ("Faculty") or at the Mershon Center for International Security Studies web site ("People" and then "Faculty"). If you want to know more about my role in the Iraq War, there are a number of my articles, appearances, and op-ed pieces available online (sorry, this site will not allow posting of URLs, but a few nifty keystrokes into a search engine will do the trick): Articles: "Milit...Expand for more
