Peter's Story

Hey everyone: Well, as of March 13 2011, I've decided to stop working fulltime. I just finished up a 1/2-year stint as the Manager of the Gainesville FL Lincare Home Oxygen Therapies Company, and it was probably the most stressful job I've ever had. I was responsible for ensuring that the Branch was in compliance with all FDA, CHA, and HIPAA requirements; also in compliance with all DOT regulations since we were running both tank and bulk LOX trucks in a 14 county area of N. FL. The previous manager had let a whole lot of things like paperwork, reports, filing etc. go undone; the position had been vacant for a couple of months when I was hired, and nothing had been done during that period. I was also responsible for increasing the new customer base every month (triple what had been achieved the previous year), and keeping everything UNDER BUDGET!!! Sorry, but I draw the line at jobs that are likely to kill me; my Dad made that mistake at the age of 56, and I don't want to be THAT much like him!. I'm looking at possibly doing two things; the first is starting a business offering to shop for and cook for senior citizens who are home-bound. I've cooked for my family and friends for 30+ years now, and it's something I have a real passion for; I just have to make sure that liability insurance is both available and affordable. The other option I have is to start a business representing local artists (painters, sculptors, and of course glassblowers!), calling on galleries, gift shops, and other potentiol retail locations. Dixie and I have collected art for years, and we have one of the coolest glass collections in North Florida; we've made numerous friends who a...Expand for more
re incredibly talented artists, and we've been approached by several of them who are looking for representation. The only big roadblock right now is the cost of gasoline. I'm taking a couple of months to recharge and recover from job burnout, so I've got time before I need to make a decision. Dixie and I are very fortunate in that we've saved a lot of our income over the years, so we don't HAVE to work. Dixie still loves what she is doing, teaching at the University of Florida (GO GATORS!) and working as Assistant Director of the Graduate-level Museum Studies Program at UF's School of Art & Art History. I also have health insurance and a pending pension from my years with Johnson & Johnson. Our kids are now almost 29 and 26; both are married. My daughter & her husband live in Tallahassee; my son & his wife live about five miles from us, so we get to see our FIVE grandkids regularly. Sunday afternoon is our time to play with the kids, culminating with Sunday dinner, which I cook for all nine of us; it's become an every-Sunday event! We may be a little biased, but our grandkids are truly the smartest, funniest, most wonderful kids in the WORLD! They range in age from 9 years down to 4 months. I've had almost 100 friends/acquaintances sign my Guestbook in the last couple of years; I hope to visit your sites soon to see what y'all have been up to. If you haven't posted any recent news, email me so I can see what you've been doing. To my friends from Bement, Greenfield High, Winchendon, and Missouri Valley College: I hope you have flove, prosperity, and happiness! PS: If you are sick to death of winter, we have the answer at island house condo 220 dot com!!
