Peter's Story

Life Left Nashville straight after graduation. Moved to Europe a year later. Have lived there ever since. Got married very young, had two children. The marriage ended after fifteen years when she fell in love with the neighbour. Married again five years later, had three more children. Moved around a bit. Worked in Germany, Switzerland, but mainly in England, where I still live now. I came back to Nashville for the first time in 2000. Looked at the former West End High (a very nostalgic moment), at the house where I lived on West End Avenue (less nostalgic) and met Dick Achuff, a good friend from our school days, whom I contacted through Classmates. Also went back to Plant City (although not for the first time since leaving - have been back there many times since moving to Europe). Wanted to show the kids my old school - didn't find it. It was my fault. Like every town Plant City had changed. Lisa Bailey informed me that the school still stands, so clearly, I took a wrong turning. I'll have to come back. But the house in which I lived has been knocked down. There's a lawn now right next to the First Methodist Church. In the meantime I managed to contact Judy Adams. She was a year above. Have been in constant contact with her. Next year (2014) my youngest daughter (17 years old) will spend a few months in Florida. I hope she has the time to pay Plant City a visit. Well, "next year" has been. My youngest daughter and I came to Florida. I dropped her off in North Florida where she stayed on a ranch, learning how to handle sensitive horses. Judy Adams lives nearby, so we finally met up after all those decades. It could have been a disaster. But it wasn't we got along marvellously. Enjoyed each others company. Had a lot to tell each other. I certainly hope to meet up with her again. I then travelled down to Plant City met up with Ken Jones. Again after all those decades. Had a great time with him and Barbara. And attended the monthly Class of '58 Breakfast. It all was a great journey back in time. Many thanks to everybody who made me feel welcome. I just realised that I talk about this trip later on on this page. Workplace Although I originally wanted to go into archeology, I ended up in the radio and TV-drama department of West German Broadcasting Corporation. Got an offer from the BBC in London and moved there. Started working freelance writing, directing and producing TV documentaries. Was offered job as assistant bureau chief of ZDF in London. In 1988 was offered job as anchor for a new business TV channel broadcasting from Switzerland. Presented their breakfast programme for two years then moved on as anchor to a new TV station in Germany, editing and presenting evening news shows. Got headhunted back to London as anchor of the flagship evening show of Dow Jones business channel EBN - broadcasting worldwide. This was taken over in 1998 by CNBC. Stayed on for a few months then decided to take up job as anchor with Bloomberg Television (all still in London). Left Bloomberg after six years. Am working freelance now. Don't miss sitting in front of the camera every day. Have done that long enough. Time for younger talents to take over. Since I can't sit still though, I taught Media Studies at the European School near Oxford for a few years - until cuts meant I was made redundant. I continue to write books about London (unfortunately they are only published in German, Italian, Danish, Swedish, Norwegian, Polish and Dutch) and I am trying to set up a web-site which ...Expand for more
should keep me off the streets for a long time. Am still working on that website. It has taken longer than I thought because other things came up. Celebrated my 70th birthday in the South of France with my five children their boy-/girlfriends and one granddaughter. We had a great time: ate, drank and laughed for a whole week. After many years of checking in Classmates managed to make contact with my teenage crush. It is a strange feeling, we haven't seen each other for over 50 years. Amazing! We have been exchanging emails. Whilst we both feel much younger than our years, we have sadly had to recognize that many of our high school friends are already dead. In the meantime a second grandchild has arrived. Our youngest daughter will be graduating from high school this July (2013). Barbara and I are making plans to leave England and possibly move to Southern Germany, there where Germany, Austria and Switzerland meet at Lake Constance. Before that I have to finish the new edition of one of my London books and write a new book on Scotland. In the meantime it is the summer of 2014. We have moved to Lake Constance. Before that I went to Florida in January with my youngest daughter, Lilly. She spent three months visiting several states before flying back to Europe. At the moment she is on her way from Australia to New Zealand. I met up in Northern Florida with Judy Adams. She was one year above me at Plant City High School. Then I made my way down to Plant City. Met up with many "boys and girls" of the Class of '58 for their monthly breakfast. Spent a lot of time with one of my oldest friends, Ken Jones. It was an amazing experience to be back at Plant City. Back in Europe, still busy writing books. Celebrated my 75 with a party that lasted nearly a week. The house was FULL. Lots of young people came to make the fete a success.. And again it is a year later. I am adding this on 17th of April 2015. A book of mine about Scotland has just been published. Unfortunately only in German. But it's got lots of photos. A publisher wants me to write my grandfather's biography. Richard Sahla (dead since 1931) was in his days a famous violinist and conductor. Well, the book should certainly keep me occupied. Update And here we are. It is the first of September 2016. Haven't even started on that biography. Just finished (yet another) guide to London. Will stop doing that. I wrote my first book on London in 1973. It hat 18 editions. I think it is very much time to hand over to somebody younger. Still very, very busy, though. Privately things have settled a bit. Grandchild number 3 (this one being the first child of the oldest daughter of the second marriage - I checked this sentence, yes it makes sense) will be one year in November. The youngest child from the second marriage, Lilly, has returned after one year at university in Australia. It was her "year abroad", which is part of her three year course studying criminology at Sheffield University in England.. My oldest son has finally opened his very own dojo, teaching Ken-do, Iai-do and Jo-do.He has held British and European titles, has many Dan-grades and is a very good teacher. I found this out when we once held an Iai-do seminar many years ago. 2017 is around the corner. That means we are less than two years away from celebrating the 60th anniversary of our graduation. In 1958 the year 2000 was unimaginably far away. Most of us have probably forgotten the dream we had in 1958. Hopefully some of us actually realised them.
