Peter's Story
After BHS, college at St. Olaf College in Minnesota, grad school at University of Minnesota, marriage to Susan Magill in 1972. Married for 41-plus years until Susan died of cancer on January 28, 2013 in our home in Dubuque -- which ironically was my mother's 101st birthday. Her ashes are in our family plot in Berlin.
Post graduate school, 10 years at Luther College, Decorah, Iowa; 13 years at Earlham College, Richmond, Indiana; and almost 19 years at University of Dubuque, Dubuque, Iowa. Susan and I worked as a professional team until her death.
When I'm not at UD, I try to spend some summer and ski time at our home in Gorham, Norwegian Wood (a la Beatles), or at our cottage, Bjorkheim (home in the woods), on Washington Island off the east coast of Wisconsin's Door County.
As you can see, there's a strong Norwegian heritage at work. You can't grow up at 399 Norway Street without it having some effect.
In May 2016, I remarried a wonderful woman from Berlin who I first met eating sushi at Norwegian Wood. Michelle Nadeau and I were married in a shorts and golf shirt ceremony in Dubuque, and recently returned from a trip to Italy and a rented villa in Tuscany. We have a ...Expand for more
bi-coastal relationship, Michelle is soon to move to Norwegian Wood, and I still work in Iowa -- we're becoming familiar with airports between Manchester, NH and Dubuque, IA. We're a family of three, including Michelle's daughter, Kennah -- now "our" daughter. I am richly blessed!
At UD, I have a "super unit" under my care comprised of Admission, Student Financial Planning, Public Affairs, and Advancement. I am blessed with superb colleagues, and while the work is challenging, it's also great fun to work toward goals with 43 "in it to win it" people combined with a great president, Jeffrey Bullock.
On the family side, I have a very close relationship with Susan's bother, Hugh, and her sister, Christy, -- I am the third sibling now. There are also two couples -- former students -- who are like family to me -- one in Washington, DC and the other in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
When I do finally decide to "hang up my spurs," I look forward to an active retirement -- hiking, biking, jogging, swimming -- in the Mount Washington Valley near the mountains that will always be home to me.
I continue to be blessed with a life that is active, meaningful, and filled with people I love.
