Phil's Story

I Went to Monroe from 1960-1963 My graduating class was the "Delphians" (Summer-63). I used to hang out with Fred Fels, Bill (Willie) Knox, Jerry Fields and Micky (Mick) Ballard. My main girlfriend was Barbara McKay. I also dated among others,Lana Turgeon and Tiena Kay Halm when I wasn't with Barb. I was in the Band (French Horn), the Choir and the Drama Club. Coaches were Mr. Giovanazzo and Mr. Taft. Wanted to play football but was too small according to Mr. Taft who was head coach but Mr. Giovanazzp really liked me, Unfortunately he was the assistant coach. Giovanazzo wanted me to go out for Cross Country (Running) because I was a "great distance runner". Our group used to like to give Fred a hard time about his little car by lifting it up and turning it sideways in the parking lot on occasion. After Monroe I attended Pierce JC intermittently. I was one of those lost souls who didn't know what I wanted to do when I grew up. Eventually Uncle Sam caught up with me and tried to draft me into the army during Vietnam. Instead, I joined the USAF for four years, became one of their prized Jet Engine Mechanics and turned down a huge (at the time) bonus to re enlist. While in the Air Force I was stationed at Travis AFB in N. Calif. I got married and had a daughter in 1969. Subsequently I had a son in 1972 and another son in 1983 by a second marriage. After I left the Air Force I moved back to the San Fernando Valley but then realized I had made a mistake because the old stomping grounds j...Expand for more
ust weren't what they used to be. We moved to Simi Valley in 1972. As the years passed I lived in Moorpark, Canoga Park and eventually Lancaster CA. In November, 1988 I married my third wife, Barbara and have been with her ever since. She is the only one who seems to be able to put up with my crazy personality. In Jan of 2006 Barbara and I made the big move to North Carolina near the town of Asheville in the Blue Ridge Mountains. We love it here. It is the realization of my ideal dream of the perfect place to live. After I moved back to So. Ca in 1972 I took a job with Calif. State University, Northridge as a Media Production Specialist. My fields of expertise were Video Production and Photography. I held that job for 31 years and retired in 2004. I loved the work but hated the politics. I was basically somewhat of a rebellious activist at the University for the whole period I was employed there. The Faculty and Students loved me but the Administration hated me. There was never a dull moment and I loved it. I should have been a politician and run for President. It would have been, at the least an exciting time for America if I had done this. My kids all have turned out great and I have six grandchildren ranging in age from 2 to 21 years old. Now we're in the mountains of NC and loving it. Every morning I get up and go out to my deck with my best two friends Max and Mick (dogs) and have my coffee and wonder at the beauty of the countryside around me. This is truly God's Country.
