Philip's Story
Life
After College between 1970 and 1972 I became a flight instructor. About then is when the first big airline crunch hit, and I ended up going to my second career. I Joined the Commerce City Police Department in 1973. I moved to Eagle Colorado in 1979. I served with the Eagle Police Department as a Sergeant, Lieutenant, and from 1993 to 2003 as the Chief of Police. As of February 26th 2003 I had 30 years as an officer, 23 at Eagle, with 10 as Chief so I "retired" from Eagle. I took a few months off and then had to go back to work. As of December 15, 2003 I was appointed as the Chief of Police in Holyoke Colorado, a small town 13 miles from the Nebraska border. In April of 2011 I left that position and now do part time prisoner transports and court security for Phillips County Sheriff's Department. I am also the plant manager for a local bean and popcorn distributor. I am still active with the Air Force Auxiliary, Civil Air Patrol. I have served as the Colorado Wing Vice Commander; Wing Director of Safety; Region Chief of Staff; Region Vice Commander; interim Region Commander; back in Colorado as the Wing Vice Commander again, and am the Rocky Mountain Region counter drug director. I hold the rank of Colonel. I still own a T-41b which is a Cessna 172 that got drafted and on steroids. Aside from that, I am raising my two grandchildren from our daughter, yes there is a story but ...Expand for more
it is long and boring. They are a girl 17 and a boy 16. The boy has mosaic downs syndrome, and functions at about a five year old level, but he is a great joy. The girl is much to smart for MY good, and I will have to keep on my toes with her. All of this may not be what I'd planned for the second half of my life, but I forgot to consult God on this. Between the kids and work, I keep busy. I think the rocking chair will have to wait 20 or so years! I have been married over 30 years now to Terri, a wonderful partner in life.
College
After high school I went to what was then called Rangely Jr. College, now Colorado Northwestern Community College. I received my commercial pilot rating the first year and flight instructor the second. Then I returned to Denver and continued my Aviation studies and started my Criminal Justice studies at Metro State. Since then I have taken quite a few criminal law classes with Colorado Mountain College, the local community college when I was up in Eagle. I have also taken a number of college level leadership courses, as well as two, week long in resident staff colleges, at Maxwell Air Force Base Alabama.
Updates: since 2018 I have been at the Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office, for a year as a deputy, then as undersheriff, and as of April 2022 as the appointed Sheriff. Kids are all gone and we are empty nest folks. Terri retired earlier this year.
