Philip Chulick:

CLASS OF 1973
Cumberland, MD

Philip's Story

Life After graduating high school, I went to Wake Forest University and graduated with a degree in political science. Jennie Yonce (whatever happened to her?) was also there at the same time. I received my Master's degree in International Relations from Boston University in 1993. After college, I went to work for a time in Yellowstone Park but left that seasonal work for a career in the federal government. I worked in procurement for the Navy in Washington for 8 years before taking a job with NATO in Belgium. I have been working in Europe with NATO for 20 years and enjoy it very much. I am the principal procurement officer for the Organisation and, right now, life is very hectic and demanding professionally. After a rather prolonged and enjoyable single life, I married in 1999 and now have 3 small children. As I married late, the family is now the all consuming aspect of my personal life and takes most of the time and energy. I have found out that having a family late in life does have its rewards, as you are brought back to a world that one thought you had forgotten, and a chance to relive part of it through the eyes of your children. My mother still lives in Cumberland and I like to get back and see the old hometown when time permits. There is a section of Belgium that has a similar topography to the area and every time I go there I get a little nostalgic. I was ...Expand for more
back for a few days over this summer and saw that there were some nice developments over at the Canal Place. Even took my wife and kids on the steam engine to Frostburg. I am somewhat less impressed with the number of prisons. Belgium is a great place to live, if a little rainy and overcast (kind of what I expect Seattle to be like). It is close to almost everywhere in Europe, with Paris just over an hour by train and London about two and a half hours. We have seen a lot of the Continent in our time here, and vacation quite often in France, Germany and Switzerland. We have even gone farther afield and taken trips to Africa and South America. While it may sound a bit exotic and high end, the truth is, no matter where you live, you have to work for a living and go through the same kind of daily hassles. Brussels is not without its heavy traffic, pollution, rude people (after all, we're next to France) and basic grind aspects. There are things about the European way of life that are completely maddening to anyone brought up in America. But there are its compensations, so I have stayed. It is home for the present but I expect to retire to America when this gig is over. If anyone from Allegany wants to communicate, let me know and I will be in touch. It is doubtful that I will be able to attend next year's reunion, but I will be thinking of you. Best Wishes, Phil
