Philip's Story
I moved to Redding after we graduated & stayed. A year at Shasta College convinced me that although I was not through with learning, I was with formal education. After a few false starts in Marriage & Employment, I signed on with the Shasta County Assessor in the Mapping Department in January 1964, & was promoted to Supervisor in 1967. In 1990 when the offices of Assessor & Recorder were combined an Administrative position was created for me as head of both Mapping & the Recorder functions that I retired from in December 2001.
Auto Racing was an obsession for a number of years, participating as a driver from 1966 to 1976 (20 main event wins & a 1974 Championship in the Super Modified division) & as starter from 1979 to 1998. My wife Cheryl & I have been together for close to 27 years. I have two daughters from previous marriages & she has one, giving us 6 grandchildren all-told.
We travel a bit & I just bought a Harley to replace my old Suzuki 1100, other than that I grow tomatoes in the summer, do genealogical research, work in Photoshop, & do Land Title research for attorneys when needed. None of this interferes with my enjoyment of a few beers in the evening, hey I'm Irish, I like potatoes too.
As you probably all know by now, growing old is not for sissies & I could complain for hours about my knee replacement & my vision problems & the pain in my wrists, & other stuff as well, but in reality I'm probably pretty well considering. I am probably as happy as I will ever let myself be, & explaining that would undoubtedly not be possible by me.
