Philip's Story
2023 - Still around and keeping busy as ever. Here’s what’s new since my profile was last updated: In April 2022 I retired from my job that primarily involved negotiating labor contracts and settling labor disputes. Like my earlier forays into retirement, this one only lasted 6 months. In October 2022 I received a gubernatorial appointment to serve as a labor arbitrator for the State of Connecticut. Now I am only semi-retired. This is a perfect retirement activity. I hear a couple of cases per month which keeps my mind active, and Elizabeth and I still have time to travel to visit grandchildren or for sightseeing. The new running joke at home is that I am a failure at retirement. Life certainly has been good to me.
2019 - Moved around after Cathedral. Worked at MIT as a technician for a couple of years, then attended college at Boston State (1970-73) followed by graduate school at Brown Univ. in RI (1973-75) where I earned a Sc.M. degree in Physical Chemistry. Worked for General Electric as a research scientist in Schenectady, NY (1976-78) and later in Twinsburg, OH (1978-81). Moved to Georgetown, MA...Expand for more
with GTE Sylvania making a living in the area of high temperature chemical thermodynamics from 1981-87. Moved to GTE Corporate HQ in Connecticut in 1987 to manage a corporate wide engineering development program in 1987. Wound up managing programs in marketing, finance and human resources as well as engineering. This solidified my move to a Human Resources management role. Moved our corporate HQ to Texas in 1998 and lived in Coppell, Texas from 1998-2000, commuting back to CT on weekends. Moved back to CT in 2000 when we formed Verizon Communications. Commuted daily to my office in Manhattan from 2000-03. Retired from Verizon in 2003. After 6 months of retirement - got bored and did HR consulting for a while, then retired again in 2006. In 2007 started working again, this time in the area of Labor Relations for a local municipality. The running joke is that I now practice Labor Law without a license.
My wife Elizabeth and I have been married for 44 years and have the five greatest sons anyone could ask for, and five wonderful daughters in law, and 11 grandchildren - 10 grandsons and one granddaughter.
