Phillip's Story
Hello everyone! I left Central and headed south to Arkansas State University were I studied for 3 yrs till my mother took ill in Los Angeles. I left school to go and help her. While in L.A. Jody Nabors (C/O 78') came to visit and we eventually got married and had two great children. Who are now grown and gone!
Jody and I divorced after about 12yrs. of marriage. I raised my two children from middle school and am proud to say my daughter just graduated from Xavier University in LA and my son is a senior at Alabama A&M.
After studying printing at O'Fallon Trade tech, I worked in the field for a number of years printing such magazines as Time, Newsweek and People. Soon after that I opened my own shop in L.A.
A tragedy changed the course and direction of my life. My youngest brother was shot and killed in L.A. This lead me to a life of community and youth work that continues till today. I was recently recognized on the "Tom Joyner Morning Show" as the "Real Man Real Father" award winner for my work as a mentor and father to young men and women in the St. Louis Area. This work also motivated me to run for Aldermen here in St. Louis.
I never would have dreamed it would come to pass but I eventually worked in various positions at Central High School for over 10 yrs.
I still work in education and motivational speaking.
I just returned from my second trip to Ghana West Africa. I take ...Expand for more
a group of students there from Gateway Middle and Compton Drew Middle every other year as part of a Rites of Passage Program that I am Director of.
One of biggest surprises is that I am back here living in St. Louis. Once I left I thought I would never return!
Since leaving Central as a low-profile type of guy I have become somewhat of a radical. Or should I say a person that believes "if its to be, then its up to me!" Therefore, I lead protest against the St. Louis Public school take over, I started a radio show, I speak wherever and whenever about the ills of gangs etc.
Ten years ago I started a project that I am going to finish no matter what! I am redoing the Redwing Yearbook! I will have copies at the next big event our class sponsors.
I believe readers are leaders and in memory of one of my favorite teachers (Mr. Freeman) I will close this with a few books I believe everyone should read;
1.) Know Thyself - Na'im Akbar
2.) Holy Lockdown - Jermijjah Camara
3.) The Falsification of Afrikan Consciousness - Amos N. Wison
4.) Awakening the Natural Genius of Black Chidren
Amos N. Wilson
5. Slavery: The African American Psychic Trauma- Sultan A. Latif
6.) African Origins of the major "Western Religions"- Yosef A.A. Ben-Jochannan
7.) Kill them before they grow - Michael Poter
8.) Christopher Columbus and the Afrikan Hollocaust - John Henrik Clarke
Peace to all my fellow Centralites!
