Phillip's Story

Phillip Krakowiak, graduated (barely Class of 72). A band geek who wanted to attend The University of Michigan school of music. Due to the Draft, and lack of basics for college life (grades to get in and cash), enlisted in the U.S. Navy as a musician. Another good deal gone wrong. The Navy needed Corpsmen more than musicians. Joining the Navy to stay out of the Army and Marine Corps was not the best thought out plan. I ended up as a Marine Line Company Corpsman with the Second Marine Division, pounding ground, going places where I never knew existed, doing things I could never imagine as possible. I once spent six weeks assigned to a British Marine unit as part of an exchange program during a training exercise. While with this unit, Prince Charles of England was our assigned Helicopter pilot. A very personable fellow with a great sense of humor. Being the Yank on board, well I was almost treated a royalty. Not bad for a kid from the Detroit area, meeting the future king of England. When the fun ran out with the Corps, I decided to take a stab at a further education. The Navy had a school, Advanced Hospital Corpsman, Independent Duty, which at the time was sponsored by The George Washington University. I never gave any thought about a college education but I was about to begin one. Upon a being selected for the school, I quickly discovered my academic achievements of the past would come to haunt me. The university reluctantly accepted me as a student due to my poor academic performance as a high school senior and placed me on academic probation. Animal House was the new movie out and of course, my roommates placed me on "double secret probation." At the end of the first semester, I was placed on the Dean's List and remained there for the rest of my time at the school and upon graduation. Yes, like most students, I did my fair share of beer study groups. Upon graduation, I was offered a spot in the Navy's Physician Assistant School. Being young and dumb and excited to go to sea, I chose a career as a Submarine Independent Duty Corpsman, Another school, but this one was only a year and I pretty much partied for year, I had already had the majority of course work at GW and ended up assisting my classmates with their studies. Sixteen years later: Three tours on subs, One tour of Instructor Duty and another degree in Vocational Education, I retired after spending 22 years as a Sailor. A good time was had and I needed a change. During this time I married the former Regin...Expand for more
a Christiansen, was had four children together and I am very proud of all of them. They turned out very well adjusted and are all living their lives as solid upstanding citizens. Regina and I had some rough times and divorced after my retirement. She is still living here in Connecticut and doing well. After retirement, I did some exploring of the civilian work world. I worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant, had my own Medical Transcription Business, Did some Material management and discovered I wanted to be a Nursing Home Administrator. I went back to school, I attended The University of New Haven and attained a Certificate in Long-Term Care. I enjoyed this line of work, it was fun competing with kids for work. So what am I doing now? I am working, without a paycheck, as a Synodically Authorized Lay Minister in a Lutheran Church in my new home town of West Haven, CT. I attended a two year study program and completed an additional year of study and discernment before being Authorized by the New England Bishop to do this assignment. I am a non-ordained Lay minister performing the duties and responsibilities of an ordained minister for this congregation. It is truly amazing how God will allow us to go out and do what we want, for a while, and when He (God) decides to use us for his purpose he calls. This was truly an offer I could not refuse. I have never in my life been so happy at what I am doing than what I am doing now. I have to give my wife Mary credit for all the assistance and support she gave me while studying to do this line of ministry. She made sure there was enough money to cover the books, tuition, travel, and study groups. So, after 39 years of wandering about, I have found a place. Do I miss the big bucks of being a Nursing Home Administrator? Not really, but the income would and could help me do more for my community and congregation. More money could be devoted to ministry out reach programs to feed and cloth those who are in need. Happy? you bet. I thank God for everything I have and don't have. I have learned there is more to life than fortune and toys. I have learned I can keep a household running on less than $100.00 a week and still not miss anything. My recommendation to all who read this is simple: Take some time and give thanks to God for all the wonderful thing He gives you each and everyday, even when we don't deserve it. You will see a change, maybe not immediately, but gradually, over time, change does occur and it is wonderful.
