Phillip's Story

Life I enjoyed a great life growing up in Boynton and later a career in Dayton, Ohio. Ours was a humble family with deep Southern roots. I received a very good public school education including putting myself through college. In 1973 I left south Florida and traveled the nation for my college Fraternity; then married my college sweetheart, Donna ( Steeley ), a teacher on July 4, 1974. We have 2 great, successful children , a daughter, Natasha, also a teacher, married ( Mark Nuttbrock ) with three beautiful granddaughters, Chloe, Kennedy and Violet ....and our son Matthew, a wildlife biologist who is also a professional fly fishing guide and runs a local fly-fishing shop. All live locally in the Dayton, Ohio area and were also greeks in college; my son a legacy in Lambda Chi Alpha. I was a former national fraternity staff member and later sat on the Lambda Chi Alpha's national board for 8 years in the early 2000's and remain on their national housing Board and national Scholarship, Nominating/governance Chair and Chaired the new CEO selection committee(s). Our kids enjoy the outdoors like me and even the cars, motorcycles, surfboards, skateboards and the other crazy crap that I seem to have acquired over the years. I lost my older Brother Roland ( Kay Seale ) who some of you knew, in the summer of 2014 who was also a Seacrest graduate ( class of 1966 ). I try to get back home to Florida as often as I can to see my Mom, Roland's family ( Kay....class of 1967 ) my Brother Larry Atchison ( Holley ) and their kids plus hunt, fish and hang out with fellow ‘69 classmate and Fraternity Brother Larry Shramko ( Patrice ‘71 ) and his family. I also serve on the Board of Trustees of the Surfing Florida Museum with Tom Warnke ( class of 1966 ) located in West Palm and actively support the Schoolhouse Children's Museum ( the old Boynton Elementary School ) in Boynton on Ocean Avenue. I've had a great civic and professional career in Dayton and am a very active volunteer in my community. As a result, I've been able to travel all over the U.S. ( all 50 states ), Canada, Cuba, Mexico, Costa Rica, Central America & the Caribbean and Ireland for world-class fishing and hunting and almost two-thirds of the world ( Japan & China, parts of Europe including East Germany a communist block country before the wall came down, Israel the Middle East, Kosovo, Croatia, Bosnia & other Balkan countries ) for business and for the U S Air Force and U S Department of Defense. I'm also a bit of a "gear head" and enjoy old motorcycles and muscle cars. I restored a '68 and '69 Triumph 650 Bonneville(s); a world-class '70 Husqvarna 400 Cross; and a rare '70 Dodge R/T 440 magnum rag top ( which won the 2016 Dayton Concours d'Elegance People's Choice Award ) and drive a C-6 Corvette. Both of which get some 1/4 mile time on the track....but still wish I had my old '59 Chevy surf-wagon and my '66 Triumph TR4A. I also have a collection of some fine old surfboards, guitars and a few interesting firearms that fill a "man-cave" garage. Seems the older we get.....the more stuff we collect. But it keeps me active and busy. High School During high school, since I loved the ocean, I was a diehard surfer ( a founding member and vice president of the local Cripple Creek Surf Club ) and lettered as a member of the High School swim team; I was President of our Interact Club ( Rotary affiliate ) for 2 years and vice-president of our sophomore class. I had a lot of great friends in school from both Boynton and Delray and enjoyed my high school experience. My favorite teacher was Johnny Mack Bird ( who passed away a number of years ago ) because he would let me and others like my buddy Joey Neumann skip class on the afternoons the surf was up....then he would come out after school to find us and surf, too. I worked during high school at a local pizza shop in Boynton called Poppa Pizza with my Brother Roland and later at Greene's Pharmacy with Larry Shramko and Tim Greene. College I worked full time and many times at 2 jobs to put myself through college, first at Palm Beach Junior College ( PBJC ) and then onto Florida Atlantic University ( FAU ) where I graduated with a BA degree in Political Science in 1973. I was very active in student government at both schools and was president of my Fraternity chapter ( Lambda Chi Alpha ) and had a great college experience. I put myself through college over the 4 years mostly as a lifeguard on Boynton and later Boca Raton beaches. I remained a competitive or active surfer until 1973 when I graduated and moved north to Indianapolis to work on my Fraternit...Expand for more
y's national staff. I received a MBA degree later from the University of Dayton in 1979 and continued my leadership training gaining 2 professional designations ( CAE and CCE ), several certifications and was named a national Ford Foundation Fellow. Workplace/Career After traveling for my Fraternity I moved to Dayton, Ohio in 1974, got married and started in the retail business ( a division of Federated Department Stores ). Later I got into the insurance industry and became a partner in one of the fastest growing small companies in America ( 72nd fastest in 1984 and 32nd on Inc. Magazine's list in 1985 ). I sold my company shares and then decided to go into the association management profession....a great choice for me and a life changer. I first became the CEO of the Home Builders Association then in 1994, the President & CEO of the Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce , the 23rd largest Chamber in the nation, After more than 26 years as CEO, I retired on July 31, 2020..While there, our U.S. Chamber of Commerce 5-star rated organization was recognized as the "Best Chamber in the Nation" in 1998-99 and and twice since a top 3 national finalist. It was also one of the oldest chambers in the nation, it remains one of the top chambers of commerce in the country. Ideologically, this career has been a excellent fit for me since I've always strongly believed in America's free enterprise system and serving my community. In the last 30 years, my career has offered me an opportunity to work with thousands of businesses and entrepreneurs helping them create many jobs as well as a strong economic impact in our region as one of the top business lobbyists in our region and state. I just couldn’t see myself fully retiring once I left the Chamber, so I set up a small consulting business that already it starting to keep me busier than I had planned. It might be easy for friends to contact me through First Cast LLC on my website of the same name. As a community leader, I was very active professionally with the Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives ( ACCE ), the American Society of Association Executives ( ASAE ) and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. I was the chief registered lobbyist for our organization , spending time in Columbus , Ohio and Washington , D.C. I am fortunate to have very close ties to many of our federal and state elected officials....our local congressman, a fellow Masonic fraternity brother, and one of my closest friends as well as the newly elected Lieutenant Governor who worked for me at the Dayton Chamber earlier in his career. In 2020, I was awarded the business community’s award as the region’s most outstanding advocate. I hope to continue my advocacy and service locally and on state issues. Community Annually, I usually average more than 500 hours of volunteer community service each year actively serving on more than a dozen local boards and perhaps over 50 different Boards during my 46+ years in Dayton. I was president of our local Jaycees chapter...named the best in Ohio and the U.S. in 1981-82 ( way...way back when and was a top state and national Jaycee leader and JCI Senator ); chaired the region's United Way campaign; chaired the region's Red Cross chapter; was president of the Presidents Club; an active board member on our Masonic Scotish Rite Foundation; a life Member and was awarded their 33rd degree; a former chairman of a local university board, Antioch University Midwest and now board member of Kettering College as well as several local hospital boards, including being active in my local church. All very interesting opportunities to serve my community....plus it keeps me busy and out of trouble....when I'm not fishing or hunting or "wrenching on cars or motorcycles. I was honored with the region's top volunteer citizen leader award in the fall of 2016 and inducted into the Dayton Business Hall of Fame in 2018. Like I said.....life in both Florida and Ohio has been great to me. The Midwest has been a great place to live, work and raise a fine family and though I miss my Florida family....and the ocean, my move to Ohio was a blessing....one that I have never regretted. I have enjoyed attending our 10th, 20th, 30th, and 40th year reunions and also attended our 50th reunion In 2019 where I had a a fantastic time seeing some of my former classmates and great friends. My sincere hope is that we can get back together sooner than 10 years as I really enjoyed my visit and miss seeing so many of you. Take care of yourselves and God’s blessings to you and your families. Your 1969 classmate and friend...... Phil Parker Updated 11/6/2020
