Phillip's Story
Life
Went up to Yosemite with John Kearney, Jay Foti, and John's brother Dennis right after graduation. Had a ball, will never forget it. Signed up for City College that first semester, but goofed off, got drafted, and joined the Marine Corps instead of going Army. Went to Viet Nam, then Japan, then Barstow, and Camp Pendelton, then out. Maintained and crewed Private Yachts, surfed, started up school again, sailed merchant seaman, cowboyed in Texas, Oklahoma, Colorado. Graduated from CSULB in 1975, BA, Psychology. Two more merchant ships, one more rodeo, one more ranch hand job, and joined the Navy. Never looked back. My Dad was a Navy Chief, I was raised in Navy Housing, so I was home. I became a Sonar Technician on Surface ships and some submarines. Chased Soviet Submarines all over the world. Loved it. Made Chief, married a Filipina I met in Japan, we've been married 17 years, and still doing fine. My son (stepson, but son to me) has just this week been selected for Chief Petty Officer himself!! I'm very proud and happy. I retired from the Navy January 1st...Expand for more
, 2003, here in Hawaii, as an Command Master Chief. Started to work right away reopening the Royal Kunia Golf Course as a Marshall, but it conflicted with the wife's schedule, and we weren't seeing much of each other, so I quit. Haven't worked since, lots of golf, some travel, and unfortunately some surgeies for a persistent, noninvasive, low grade from of cancer in my bladder. Fixing to go in for another surgery this August 10th. Will get Chemo after that, and that should wrap it up. I hear from some folks occasionally, saw John Kearney a few years ago, he lives in Tennessee. Mary Healey married a good friend of mine some years ago, and I heard from Theresa Mays a while back. I made most of the reunions until the last one, missed this one, my son was visiting on leave. He's in USS Lincoln(CVN72) in Everett Washington. Also always see Cathy Charest when I go home for a visit. I have always had a great feeling for Saint Anthony's and miss those days and many of you folks. Looking at some of your pictures, life has been very good to Fitz and Yolanda! See ya!!!
