Phyllis's Story
I attended Henry Ford High School on Evergreen & 8 Mile Road in Detroit for grades 9, 10 & 11 where I had many good friends, was active in many organizations like Student Council, National Honor Society, Henry Ford High School Yearbook & Newspaper publications, Bnai Brith Youth Organization (BBYO), Junior Red Cross, Latin & Spanish Clubs, and more. I was very happy at Hebry Ford, but my parents decided to move to
Southfield, Michigan, in the fall of 1961, my senior year of high school. I attended Southfield High School for my senior year. I made many new friends and joined organizations but missed all the camaraderie and my close friends like family at Henry Ford High School.
I applied and was accepted to attend the University of Michigan, Michigan State University, Wayne State University, & Eastern Michigan Unicersity. I attended Wayne State University in Detroit, where I earned my undergraduate teaching degree with certification to teach all subjects, Grades K-8 and a Masters Degree in School Library Science with certification to teach media in Grades K-12. I began my teaching career in
September 1967, teaching fourth grade at Cromie Elementary School in Warren, Michigan for Warren Consolidated Schools, where I loved the administration, teaching and support staff, staff, students, parents, and community. I taught grades two through 4 at Cromie for
18 1/2 years until
January 1981, when I took a
1 1/2 year leave of absence to spend time with my baby daughter, Jennifer. In September 1981, I was assign...Expand for more
ed to be a media specialist 3 days a week at North Elementary School and 2 days a week at Angus Elementary. It was very challenging beginning a new career in the media center of two different elementary schools after loving and being a classroom teacher for almost 20 years. Methods and procedures that I learned in Library Science graduate school were very different almost 20 years later. I did my best my first year as a media specialist in two schools, and then the following year and next two years, I was transferred to two different elementary buildings each year. I made new friends, loved my teaching career, and worked well with the classroom teachers, students, and staff because I had the background, experience, and love of being a classroom teacher for years. In addition, I spent time teaching for almost one year in Detroit Public Schools prior to being hired in Warren Consolidated Schools. In 1992 I was interviewed and hired by John Jones, principal of Grissom Middle School, in Warren Consolidated Schools, where I would be a media specialist five days a week instead of going to two different schools. Ixwas reunited with many families and students thar I made friends with from North and Hatherly Elementary in Sterling Heights, MI. I taught at Grissim Middle School for 13 years until I retired reluctantly from my memorable, rewarding teaching career in June 2005.
I have enjoyed my retirement traveling, having fun with friends and relatives, and being able to escape the brutal Michigan winter weather.
