Wonderfully hot summer days and the cool evenings that followed. The clean, clear air.
The coyotes running the streets at night. And their howling. The train whistles in the distance. The earth quaking, window rattling blasts from the mine. Our picnics in Joshua Tree National Monument. Dad walking in the back door at 4:30 in the afternoon all covered in iron ore with his gray hair and eye brows a soft brown from the ore dust; giving me a glimpse of his youth.

Our Saturdays at home; sometimes making homemade doughnuts as a family and sometimes BBQ-ing. Walking home from school knowing that Mom would always be there. Dust devils on very windy days. Dad on his scooter after its weekly hosing off. Learning to drive in the middle of the desert, in that old English Ford that replaced his scooter.

Sometimes going to the store with Dan. And, posing for Larry in the backyard when he was discovering photography. Working in the high school office; working on and editing the Talon and Eagle's Banner.
In the Mine's early days, Mom turn hosting the Canasta gathering of residents and teachers employed there. Dad reading from Bedtime Bible Stories and American Folklore while we munched on our share of the event's goodies. Louis Hall's famous pimento cheese sandwiches and the extras she made just for me, because I love them so much.
