Phyllis's Story

Life I started my educational career in Mrs. Armstrong's Kindergarten class at Franklin Road School. From there I was moved to Thornbrae Public School until the death of my father in 1962. Then I was moved to Peace Memorial School for the remainder of my elementary time. For Junior High I atteneded George L. Armstrong School, a very old school" on the mountain" that still stands today! For High School I attended three! I first went to Sherwood Secondary, then Burlington Central, then Aldershot High, and actually graduated at the end! Yea, surprised me too. Maurice Gull (an alumni of Sherwood Secondary High) and I were married in July 1972 and we`re still going strong. After a collection of jobs, car accidents and 4 children we now reside in central Ontario near a beautiful lake and have worked in a few interesting jobs. Sidelined again due to herniated discs. We had a beagle named Wynonna, she is now deceased. Maurice is a French Teacher. We also have eight grandchildren! They are quite a delight. That's all for me--have a great day! School I have many stories to relate about schools I attended. I graduated from Aldershot High School in Burlington from the Business and Commerce course, only because they wouldn't let me into shop or auto. I finally mastered the computer and am on to other endeavors. I have some favourite schools and favourite teachers as I'm sure all of you do. I remember a few teachers for their kindness shown to our family. Mrs. Armstrong, kindergarten--Franklin Rd., Mrs. Kirby, my Grade 1 teacher from Franklin Road, there aren't words to describe her kindness over the years after she left teaching and went into social services work. My most inspirational teacher was Mr. George Fisher in grade 6, Peace Memorial School. He basically encouraged me to do things I was confident I could do, and do a good job. Mr. Skerritt, at G. L. Armstrong School was an amazing English teacher. He made you appreciate the language we speak and was very in tune with the young. I met him later on when he was a principal and he remembered me! That was many moons later. Mrs. Paulencu at Sherwood High School. Toug...Expand for more
h, strict and a great teacher. I still remember the lessons she taught on typing and shorthand even though I don't use the shorthand at all! I met up with her later on when she left teaching and went into selling Avon, which she was also excellent at. Mr. Whaley at Burlington Central High School whose kindness got me through a very rough year at a new school in a city I wasn't familiar with. I went on to graduate from Aldershot High School with some fond memories of the students and teachers. Workplace I have worked in various fields over the last 38 years. After graduation I worked for Angus Employment Agency as a temp. Unfortunately, a bad car accident knocked me out of that career path. While living in Hamilton and Burlington, I worked as a professional cleaner for 22 years while our children were in school along with my own daycare and cosmetics sales. I went on to drive school bus and eventually livery for Blue Line Taxi, work in fast food and retail. After moving north I was a waitress and finally a desk clerk for a motel that taught on the job hospitality service. Unfortunately, a broken neck sidelined me for ten years. I was a security guard until old age put me on the sidelines. Apparently, you can teach an old dog new tricks! Have a great day! VOLUNTEER Maurice and I are Jehovah's Witnesses and have been for over 40 years. I have also done volunteer work for the Hamilton School Board and Simcoe County School Board. That continues today. I wear what I can afford and still look decent in. I share my home with Maurice, which I find comforting. In 10 years, I hope to be older. I'm going to get there by taking it one step at a time.. My first job was at Ernie Gage Janitorial Service, where I got paid $0 to $0. What I remember most about it is I got to work with my brother and learn much.. The year I turned 11 my mother and great aunt and I were going to take the Macassa across to LaSalle Park. We walked down only to find out it was not running so we walked back to the bus terminal and caught a bus to Burlington Beach Amusement Park. It was extremely hot, we got burned and laughed alot. Great day.
