Phyllis's Story
Life
Hello to all,
In 1965, half way through my Junior year, I married a special guy who was in the Army and had 1 year left until discharge. I was able to continue my high school education via correspondence courses and graduated in 1967. Rather unconventional but successful.
After Gene got out of the Army we moved back to his childhood home in Tacoma, Washington. In 1969 our daughter was born and in 1972 our son joined the family.
1972 was a busy year as we completed building our home in the rural community of Browns Point.
This was a perfect place to raise our family. Our home faces Commencement Bay, we have 3/4 of an acre where we have apple trees, blackberry bushes, and hazel nut trees.
I have been very active in the American Indian Community that started when I did my internship for my Human Services Degree for the Puyallup Indians.
My mother and I are enrolled tribal elders with the Marten Clan, Fond du Lac Band, Minnesota Ojibwe. We also have family ties with the Lac Courte Oreilles Band and the Red Cliff Band of Wisconsin Ojibwe.
Mom and I were able to visit our home "rez" and found that we have alot of relatives we never knew we had.
My grandfather spoke the language but Mom and I are slowly learning.
During my working ...Expand for more
years I taught Early Childhood Education for 7 yrs. and worked over 20 yrs. as an LPN/Counselor in Geriatric Psychosocial Nursing focusing on elders with terminal diagnosises.
Gene, my husband, worked for 30 yrs. with the Tacoma School District as an electrician. He had to take a medical retirement due to the diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis.
His physical health and function is declinging at a steady rate but he has such a positive attitude and good nature that really helps when his not so good days outnumber his good days.
We are both very strong in our Christian faith. I am a Benedictine Oblate associated with the monastery in Tucson.
I have several hobbies: Crocheting, Reading the Holy Scriptures, cooking, horseback riding, working in the garden, and driving my PT Cruiser.
I have 3 younger brothers: Rocky-Long haul trucker, Robert-Captain in the U.S.Navy, and Donald-courier in Colorado.
Our son Aaron married Sonya in 1998 and currently reside in Auburn, Washington and our daughter Debbie married John (her high school sweetheart) in 2004. Deb and John currently live down in California.
I hope all former THS students are well and enjoying life. I also hope that some will contact me. I'd love to correspond with you.
Peace always.
