Phyllis's Story

I guess it's time for the 2009 update. I didn't realize how long it had been since I last updated. Our 35th reunion has come and gone and I am already looking forward to the next one. We really had a great time at the 35th. Those who missed it missed a great time. In January of this year, John was laid off his job. He is still looking, but hasn't found anything yet. God has been so faithful in providing for us that we are not concerned. We know he will provide and John will find a job when the time is right.I am still caring for my daddy, who is 89 now. I do his grocery shopping, take him to doctor's appointments, etc. I still pick our granddaughter, Breanna, up from school everyday. She just started 3rd grade. Her little brother, Chandler, is 3 now. I keep him occasionally and he is so precious. Meredith is in massage therapy school and I try to help her out when I can. Melissa is still teaching preschool and is such a blessing to all the little children whos lives she touches. God has not blessed her with her own baby yet, but she is definitely a "second mom" to so many children. My step-daughter Amanda's house burned in the spring. A week after they moved into their new house, she gave birth to her second son, Cameron. His brother Austin is 3. As for me, I've been busy helping some friends and family with their weddings. I was probably one of the oldest bridsmaids in history last month. My friend, Carol, had a renewal ceremony for her 25th anniversary. I did her flowers and helped with other aspects of the ceremony. It was a wonderful day. John and I aren't traveling much these days, but plan to visit friends and family in Florida before too long. My sister, Susan, lives there now and I really want to get down there to see her. Maybe soon. John's 35th class reunion was last weekend and we enjoyed visiting with his classmates. His lack of a job enabled him to be able to help with this one. All the other committee members said he was an invaluable asset. Well, guess that's about all for now. I'll ...Expand for more
try to do better at updating. Until then, God bless you all. Wow, It's now 2015 and I just realized how long it's bee since I last updated this. Where to begin? I guess the biggest "event" was the passing of my daddy in April. I had been his caregiver for so many years that his death was really hard. I know it's always hard to lose a parent, but when you've been with them almost everyday helping care for them, it's really hard. Seven weeks after my daddy died, my mother-in-law died as well. Seems there has been a lot of loss in the past couple of years. It started with the death of one of my greatest friend, Hazel, in 2013. In 2014 my longtime friend Faye died. Later that year an elderly friend died after another friend and I had carried her out to celebrate my birthday. I held her head in my hands as she took the last breaths she ever took on her own. Last year I "lost" my sister, Susan, to alzheimer's. She isn't dead, but has memory loss and has had to move to a memory care facility to live. Thankfully, she still remembers me when I visit but sometimes the visits are hard. She has her good days and her bad.John is now working at Duke Regional Hospital in Durham. He's been there two years. Melissa has recently moved back in with us temporarily. She is still teaching 4 year olds. Meredith is engaged and planning a wedding for May. She is working as a pharmacy tech and also helping her fiancé do bookwork for his business. Breanna is now 14 and Chandler is 9. They grow up so fast! My step-daughter now has 3 boys. She and her husband just sold their house and will be moving in a couple of weeks. I am spending a lot of my time this summer in the pool. I know, it's a hard life, but someone has to do it. lol! We put in a radiant pool in the spring and I am really enjoying it. John's schedule at the hospital doesn't allow us to travel like we used to so I can float in the pool and pretend to be in some tropical location. I guess that's enough for this update. I must do better and updating in the future!
