Phyllis's Story
Life
Hello Colts,
I don't know if my life is a fascinating read for anyone, but I have certainly enjoyed living it for the past 62 years!
After I graduated from CHS, I went to Mt. SAC and then on to USC. It was an interesting experience for a small-town girl who suddenly found herself part of a large university in a big city. For the first two months all I remember is being homesick. After I realized I was at college (a whole 35 miles away from home) to stay, I began to love USC and even earned my master's degree there.
Today, I am still very much a Trojan and am involved in several USC activities that raise money for scholarships. Both of our children Jennifer (30) and Michael (27) also graduated from USC. It must have been all those USC football games and tail-gate parties I dragged them to for years when they were little. I also liked to hum the "Conquest" song around the house.
One of my happiest accomplishments is being married (36 yrs.) to Frank. He's wonderful, intelligent, caring, and ...unfortunately, they just don't give me enough space to go on and on about him. We met one day through a mutual friend (his boss) whom I was dating at the time. Best day of my life! Frank retired from Fluor/Daniel as Vice-President of Engineering. His "retirement" lasted about 5 minutes until he formed his own consulting company.
During those years of marriage, Frank has taught me how to survey open desert in Arizona during 112 degrees heat; ride an ATV up and down mountains; go spelunking in caves with bats flying all around me; handle a Colt six-shooter; and spot petraglyphs as well as rattlesnakes on a sandy desert wall at twilight. (ADVICE: Never marry an outdoorsman unless you are prepared to lead an adventuresome life.) We've also traveled down rivers in Thailand, Vietnam, and Cambodia.
After 12 years of teaching and school administration in the Covina Valley Unified School District (with Dr. Erwin Jones as my boss), I became a real "June Cleaver" minus the starched dress and pe...Expand for more
arls. Instead, I wore lots of Levis and tee shirts while being a team mom, scout leader, room mother, chauffeur, etc. Why oh why didn't they invent cell phones sooner? Staying home to raise the kids was fun. Both of them turned out brilliantly so I must have done something right!
When Jenn and Mike left the nest, I returned to teaching. Currently, I have the pleasure of teaching students with autism, Aspberger, bipolar disorder and others who haven't been specifically diagnosed yet. I think of my students as "my kids" and love each and everyone of them.
Just recently we adopted our four-legged "kid", Freddy. He's a labradoodle and has been a great guy (see photo). I guess it was an unexpected dose of "empty-nest" syndrome that inspired me to add Freddy to the family. Anyway after many years of driving a "mommy-mobile", I now drive a bright red sports car with Freddy hanging his head out the window. Sweet! It's possible I may also be suffering from a delayed mid-life crisis.
Frank and I travel a lot, too...everywhere. Last year was Peru, Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, and Chile. This year was China, Taiwan, Japan, Cambodia, Vietnam and Thailand. Before that there was Europe, the former eastern bloc, Russia and more. However, one of our best trips was right here in the USA. We traveled on a stern-wheeler (see photo) up the Columbia and Snake Rivers following the Lewis and Clark Trail. The scenery and wildlife were awesome. The hiking trails and white water rafting were memorable.
Each year we try to spend time in Alaska (my favorite place to be.)You can sit (on the other side of a stream) and watch the bears catch their evening meal. So far all the bears we've met have decided the salmon probably taste better than we do.
If you ever go to USC football games, look for me. (I am now a redhead.) If you like to do lunch, email me. And if you're reading this bio, please leave me a message. I'd love to hear from you.
Love to all you COLTS, Phyllis
