Polly's Story

Realizing that so much time has passed is startling... how did I get to be in my 60's? Wonder what you all feel about how life has NOT turned out like we had planned. I am not complaining,,,it is just different,, and I guess I thought I had more control over what it would be. I never dreamed of being a nurse,, and yet I loved my job as a Labor Nurse for 40 yrs.... I wanted to be an artist,,, and actually am just beginning to make that happen. After leaving Alexandria at the end of my junior year the family moved to Spain with my navy father.. I was so pissed at my dad for taking me away from graduating HS with my friends but the two years living in Europe turned out to be really precious, with some of the best memories and incredible life experiences. When I finally did come back to the states it was seeing it with new eyes. Went to Roanoke, VA for three year nursing program,,loved the beautiful Blue Ridge Mnts. got a taste of good old Southern Baptist religion which I have out grown I am pleased to say. It was the beginning of my spiritual path of life learning which continues today. I am very much enjoying Oprah Winfrey's embracing of spiritual teachers on her website in her "soul series" interviews.. great stuff.Byron Katie, Neale Donald Walsch, Eckhart Tolle, Maryanne Williamson Check it out!!We are all on a spiritual journey whether we know it or not. I have two wonderful children who have grown into thoughtful, loving people. My daughter is living in Telluride, Co and is learning the real estate market there, she LOVES skiing and nature activities. I love going to visit and skiing with ...Expand for more
her. My son is in the Air Force, living in GA and is expecting his 3rd son soon. I'm going to meet the new family member soon. I love coming back to the east coast, so different from SoCal. Sure DO NOT miss mosquitoes back there. When 2016 rolled around I realized I had been an R.N. for 40 yrs and I'd be happy to retire. Retirement is much better than I ever imagined. Like endless summer vacation and no parent telling me to come in when the sun goes down. The freedom to do whatever I please is super, NO alarm clocks starting the day. Here in San Diego I can garden all year long, and have joined the SD Horticulture Society, My husband Peter and I walk, hike, bike and love being home too. Love our garden and bird feeders right outside, cooking, art projects and reading. I had an incredible raft trip through the Grand Canyon in 2009, me and my sister on a raft for 16 days with 5 other rafts and 14 other wonderful adventurers, we became known as the "naked bohemian rafters",, not naked all the time, I would have shriveled up into a crispy ash, and most of the time I was covered head to toe to avoid the sun on my pale redhead skin, but wherever there was a waterfall to get under we were NAKED, and it was like being a kid again. I would do it again in a heartbeat. Scary? Yep, those rapids were challenging to get past without flipping,,, two rafts of our group did flip during the trip, and thankfully no one hurt more than a twisted ankle and adrenaline thrill. I don't have a bucket list of things I must do. It is all good, each day offers adventures, and attitude is so much of the joy we experience.
