Portia's Story

For the most part, Portia P. Jones, who is still Portia P. Jones, was a loner. I really didn't draw attention to myself. I was the average high school student. I was fortunate enough to hang around the most popular kids in school at the time (the athletes). I was a cheerleader, and known for being loud. I acquired a nickname(Wall2wall) which I care not to discuss how I got it. {[For those of you who remember, shame on you :-) ]} I was in ROTC for a while, but was known for being in the chorus. I kinda stayed in trouble, but not really. I stayed in the principal's office a lot with Dr. Hobbs. In my senior year, my best friend turned out to be the smallest person in the entire class, Sharon L. Brown, best known as "Lil' Bit". She and I were a pair. She was the total opposite of me in statue, but we were true to each other in every way. Shared what we had to say to and about each other with each other. (If you are reading this Lil' Bit, thanks for your true friendship :-)) My three favorite cousins in school were Calvin Davis, Sherry Stone and Barbara Murray. Calvin was like my knight in shining armor. He was always there for me no matter what. He fixed my car when I tore it up. He and my other cousin Charles took me opossum hunting with the car. I am talking literally with a car. We didn't have guns. They'd drive down the road with the lights on dim, when we saw an opossum, Charles would flip the lights on bright and stomp the accelerator and try to run it over with the car, even in the ditch. (Yes, Calvin, I remember that terrifying night.) Sherry was the little sister that I never had. Enough said. Barbara, also known as "Pill" was the friend that I could talk to about an...Expand for more
ything. No matter what the conversation was about "Pill" would end it with saying something positive and hopeful for a better tomorrow. As for life's aspirations, I did not do anything I set out to do. My life took a whole new turn as I started living. So, there's no need in mentioning what I wanted to do. It didn't happen. As for the love of my life then, there was only one that physically came into fruition, Arthur Gordon. Arthur ended up dating someone else by gradutaion and that was fine. He and I were still friends. My secret love, which I guess is no longer a secret now that I put it here, was Harry McCall. No one ever knew, including Harry, so he never gave me a second look. As a result, I just let the crush fade away as I entered college. I had a crush on a few other people, but I won't embarass you by listing your names. (If you come to the Reunion, I'll tell you there.) I pretty much liked all of my teachers. There were only two that rubbed me the wrong way. Now that I am an adult I forgive them. Actually, I forgive one, the other I have come to appreciate her contribution to my adulthood. Betsy Milburn, a sixth grade teacher called my friends to her class during break and told them that I was bad influence and that they should not be around me or allow me to be their friend; very childish for an adult, I thought. The one I have grown to appreciate is Beryl Usry. She was a hard-butt, cold and very impersonal. But, her discipline and commitment to learning, I've grown to appreciate. I never thought I'd see "the Great Gatsby, Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensitivity," or other of those books again. But I saw them all in college. Thanks, Ms Usry, for the heads up.
