Rachael's Story

School Let's see.... I started out in 1981 at Cactus Elementary where I excelled at being a tomboy. I moved on to Levelland Middle School where big hair ruled and you couldn't have enough aqua net and "acid-washed" denim. That was the worst time of my life. Junior high, on the other hand, was one of the best. I broke from my shell and became "radar". That was short-lived fun. High school forced me back into the woodwork, where I contently dwelled amongst everybody and slept in Mrs. Vernon's English class. I took two years of classes at South Plains College. Let me tell you, it was a blast. I made so many new friends, but they didn't stick around. Either way, I still miss the days of SPC. I worked all through my college years to make up for what I didn't have in high school. After graduating with an associates in Print Journalism, I took a year off and transferred to Texas Tech where, once again, I was a wallflower going unnoticed but almost never unappreciated. I finally graduated in 2000 with a Bachelor of Arts in English. I hated Tech. Right now, I'm seriously considering entering into grad school, but we'll see. College I loved SPC. I hated Tech. Refer to school bio. Workplace Work: What can I say? I used to be allergic, but now, I've grown immune. I never worked through high school at my parents' request. Almost as soon as I graduated in '94, I was hired on as a cashier at Kentucky Fried Chicken. I worked there for 5 years (off and on). During those years, I took 2nd jobs as a telemarketer, meat market employee (which lasted 2 weeks), and a summer as a master control operator at UPN 22. It's a funny story why they won't hire me again. ...Expand for more
Remind me to tell you. I had a brief stint as a DJ. That one didn't pay, but I did have a stalker. After my last leg at KFC, I got a job at GV Publications where I was a proofreader. I loved it there. I met one of my best friends there. Working at GV consisted of playing weird games, acting like a radio talk show and speaking with people around the country. Those are funny stories, too. Well, in August 2001, God lead me to a strange profession. (At least it was strange to me.) As a recipient of a Bachelor Degree in English, I started my career in the juvenile justice field. I was a juvenile probation officer in Hockley County. I was going to give back to the community. I know what you're thinking. I didn't think I'd be tough enough either, but it turns out that I am. The job is rewarding because, even though I couldn't be friends with the kids on my caseload, I could somehow teach them to have a conscience and think about what they do. *Sniff, sigh* I wasn't looking to leave that place, until I got a job that would help my career. Although I love love loved working in Hockley County with Norm and all of those misguided kids, I took a job in Austin. I'm working with the Texas Juvenile Probation Commission (TJPC) as a Compliance Resource Specialist. I started on 01/19/06. I've been here for some time now, but I still really miss home. In October 2007, I married the most wonderful man in the whole wide world. After 6 1/2 years of living 1400 miles (or about 2300 km) away from each other, Dave Kapur is now my husband. We have 2 dogs. Macho has been placed with grandma and grandpa because he is a bully, and my little Sofi is with us in Austin.
