Rachel's Story

At age 16, a crime visited upon Rachel by the man she loved resulted in the death of her unborn baby, in significant injuries to her body, and in lifelong illness. A devout Christian, she protected those involved in the crime, especially Jonathan, but the pain of that event led to a reevaluation of her rejection of the family business: Law Enforcement. Because of the pain and suffering and horror of the physical harm and emotional harm that was done to her, along with the feeling of inescapable helplessness, she reversed course in life. Because of the loss of her child, a fire was lit within her. She went from refusing a life in law enforcement and all of the violence that comes with such a life, to committing herself to a life in law enforcement which would allow her to protect others from violent criminals. She went from destined homemaker, wife and mother, to wanting nothing more than to catch criminals, as her officer and agent uncles had taught her to do. Rachel graduated from the University of California at Irvine with degrees in Criminology and History of Religion and Law and she became a Criminologist, but only for a time, first as a researcher and then as a consultant. After the cost to those who serve became clear to her and she realized that, in every criminal, she was looking at another woman's child, she chose to walk away, opting for a quieter life. ate in law enforcement, where the risk of criminals dying remains so significant. No woman should ever suffer the unparalleled pain of her child being murdered. Away from violence, she became a writer, product tester, and product reviewer, but primarily a writer. While not a success by the standards of most people, she considers herself a great success, having never drawn a weapon outside a firing range, having never taken a life. Honoring God by loving her enemies meant choosing to never participate in violence and somehow she never has. Still, many years later, she returned to that life for a time, when she finally worked her last case to date, in an unconventional way designed to ensure that no criminal was harmed while lives were being saved. In doing so, she came to understand that the years spent in this endeavor were not wasted, for those lives that were saved. She also concluded that she made the right decision to let it all go. The past cannot be undone, even in protecting others, and a life filled with secrets and lived around violence is not a life worth living. If you love your enemies, if you lay down all weapons, if you follow God in every way possible, then life has a way of lifting you up and out of the darkness, even when people you love have sought to trap you there. There is no substitute for saving lives, yet there is no excuse for taking them. The quiet life, as it turns out, has suited Rachel rather well.
