Rachel's Story

In 1976, I graduated from Montgomery Blair High School and went to Syracuse University where I majored in Chemistry. Since then, I have worked as a chemist, quality control analyst, author, freelance writer, researcher, college counselor, and mathematician. I began teaching chemistry and English in 1980 and have been a mathematics professor for nearly three decades. Although it may sound static, my life has taken many dynamic twists which have taught me lots of lessons. Mostly, my life's adventure can be defined as the consummate student. There have been only a couple of years out of the last four decades in which I was not in college including Harvard undergrad and grad school, Gallaudet University, Pepperdine, USC, CSUF, and a bunch of other schools. I first applied to college in 1973 and now, I am still a college student with numerous degrees in a wide variety of fields. My Ph.D. is in Higher Education Leadership from the University of Texas at Austin in which I flew back and forth from California to Texas each week for full time school in Texas while working full time in California. I am currently completing an MBA from Claremont Graduate University in California just to have a deeper knowledge of finance and accounting. My other degrees include masters degrees in mathematics and computers. Counseling students to help them get into undergraduate and graduate school is a passion of mine. I have taught at UCLA in their...Expand for more
College Counseling Certificate Program and supervised about a dozen college counselors in my college counseling office in Irvine, California. My company is called Educators with a Vision, College Counseling Center. There, I support students academically through tutoring and test prep, but mostly I guide students through the college planning and essay process so that they can better understand the options that may fit with their passions. This month I won the MacFarland Literary Achievement Award at an award ceremony in Sacramento for my writing, which I passionately pursue every chance I get. My doctoral dissertation was entitled, "Managing Academic and Personal Life in Graduate Studies: An Interactive Qualitative Analysis of Persistence and Transformation." For the remainder of my life, I will be a college guide, academic coach, and an advisor to students and parents so that they better understand college options and succeed academically to achieve their goals. Mathematics is a stumbling block for students, but I teach some classes that motivate and inspire students. I will continue to empower students and remove the barriers they perceive. I am married to a great guy who supports everything I pursue and travels to all of my speaking engagements, conference presentations, and workshops wherever they are around the world. He is a gem. My hobbies are travel, Scrabble, technology, dancing, writing, and supporting the arts.
