Rachel's Story

My Story By Rachél Forbes Kiell I was born in Joelton TN in 1962; let's just say it was a very abusive home. My natural father beat my mother as well as us kids. My Mother saved our lives by finally getting up the courage to leave in 1964. We went to CA were we lived until 1968. While out there, I did some modeling work to help support our family. My Mother was single and doing her best to raise three children without having graduated from high school. She did get her GED while we were in CA. Way to go Mom!!! I constantly had to look over my shoulder to see where my natural father could be laying in wait. He tried to kidnap me just upon our arrival to CA and he also broke into our home and took everything we had. Mom kept her head up and we survived. Mom got remarried to Ronald (Ano) Forbes and we came back to TN. We stayed with my Grandparents in Dickson for a year before moving to Fairview where my youngest sister, Judith was born. My Granddad became very sick and we moved back in with him and Granny. He died with cancer shortly there after. They had a large farm and we had lots to do. Back then there was no,I'm bored! Everyone pitched in and we survived yet again. My sister Gretchen and I went to Charlotte Jr. High for a couple of years while living in Vanleer and my brother Tony only had one more year to graduation in Fairview so he continued to go there. He stayed with family friends until he graduated and then joined the Navy. Mom and Ronald got divorced due to more abuse and we moved to Dickson. Judith was enrolled in the elementary school while Gretchen and I both went to Dickson Jr. High and then to DCHS where we graduated in 1979 and I in 1980. I was pretty shy back then, and Gretchen was much more outgoing. I really didn't have many friends but the ones I had were great! Now that I look back on it, I think I just didn't want to draw any attention to myself because I was still looking over my shoulder for my natural father. I didn't want to be a cheerleader because that was too public, so, I became the mascot. Hidden behind a suit, I could act as I wanted and no one knew. I had a lot of fun with that. I was teased and made in front of by several because I was very skinny and had long, long hair; nicknamed by Mr. Johnson as "Paintbrush". Go figure. I was not one of the elite of the class but I wasn't at the bottom either. I was just middle of the road, average if you will. I knew my mother could not afford to send me to college, not through any fault of her own, that's just the way it was. I worked in the summers cutting, raking, bailing and hauling hay to try to make money. I also did a lot of babysitting. I went to LPN Training until my money ran out and I could not get assistance because the government thought my mother made too much money at $15,000 a year with three kids still at home. What a joke. of them do what she did to make ends meet. Anyway after school, I went to work for United Cities Gas Co. in Nashville. I worked there for eight years before getting married and moving to Houston TX. My mother remarried a man by the name of Gordon and they moved to OR and then to CA. I married Rich Kiell and we had a beautiful baby boy named Randall in February of 1989. Rich was a Senior Computer Programmer and Analyst. We had a beautiful home, really too big. Ever heard of being house poor, that's what we were. In 1992 Rich and I got divorced and moved to Dallas and then to San Antonio TX. Randy and I moved back to Dickson when he was in Kindergarten. Live is so funny, I couldn't wait to get away from home and off that God forsaken farm when I was in school, but that is exactly where I brought my son to raise him. I wanted him to have the "small town" home that I had. I wanted him to work on the farm and help doing the same things I did when I was his age. Fix the fences, take care of the livestock, ride the lawn mower. I am glad I did, he is a very good person and knows what work is and is not afraid of it. He is very intelligent and is now in the National Guard. When I came back to Dickson, I got a job in Nashville working for Nortel Networks so I didn't get to hang around Dickson much. I kept my son busy or maybe the other way around. We had church, baseball, cub scouts, and karate, then on to WRESTLING!!!! That is where we spent most all of our time; either at practice or at tournaments. First it was the traveling team then on to High School. When I first came back to town, I met my brother's best friend, Cal. We "dated" for five years before we got married. Pressure from everyone on both sides of the family and I felt very guilty for not have a father for my son. His dad was not much of a presents in his life, he still isn't. Cal and I should have stayed friends and should never have gotten married. It did not last long and made for some very hard feelings along the way. My sister Judith was living with his best friend Larry in Kansas City MO and as I said he and my brother were very close. It made for hard times. I did learn to ride a motorcycle and got a 1200 Sportster while I was with Cal. We went on several rides; most of his friends followed the lead. We traded our horses "hay burners" for "steel-horses". We did have a lot of fun riding. Mom and Dad moved back from CA to the old place on Tidwell Switch Rd. We are very close now. I have had different jobs over the last couple of years but I am now doing something I absolutely love. I am a Profession Entertainer Coach Driver. Last year I was driving full time for Ms. JoDee Messina. She is a wonderful lady and her road manager along with her band and crew are all one big happy family. This year, 2009 I am driving for Vince Gill and Daryle Singletary. Still loving every minute of it.
