Rafael's Story

Well, where to start... shortly after graduation in '88 I went straight to the military, leaving my family and, as most of you who knew me back then, my high school sweetheart. I didn't take well to the military life and after a series of mishaps from there to home I came back home. No more sweetheart (who, by the way, was one of the best things that could have ever happened to me), no more military, and nothing but trouble on the streets. So, from the age of 20 - 30 years old I did absolutely nothing. Can you relate? If so, read on... I can't say I did "absolutely nothing" since I started my family of 4 girls during this time frame. My oldest is Angeli (15 this Christmas), Ashley (10), Rianna (6), and Gisella (5). Yes, I went backwards with starting a family and then trying to figure out how I was going to pay for it all. Let me tell you, that was a struggle until I got fed up in 1999. Before becoming a divorcee, I started school which ended up being the smartest thing I have ever done. So, read on... In 2000, I had enough of working miserable, low paying jobs and seeing my life just drag on as it passed by before deciding to go back to school. I enrolled into Harrisburg Area Community College (HACC) just to see if I could do it. Guess what, I loved school and went full-time as I worked full-time to finish my AA with an A average in 2006. I went as long as I did, because I ended up having to re-do most of my classes after the internet bust in 2003. No biggie, I capitalized on that and started making money even though I had to start all over. Yes, I learned I was a nerd after all. But it gets better... ...Expand for more
read on. In 2006, I then enrolled into Pennsylvania State University in the Information Sciences and Technology program where I only went for 3 semesters before graduating with my Bachelor of Science degree. Yeah, only 3 semesters since I transferred like 116 credits from HACC. Go figure. I loved school. I ended up with like a 3.8 GPA. Now, I have been working for the Commonwealth for 3 going on 4 years for the Department of Transportation as an Information Technology Generalist Administrator I. Yes, I know that is a long title so imaging having to put that on resumes. I love my job, where I work, but am always looking to move up into better, bigger, higher paying moves. I also am part of a project that, when successful, will put my name (and the project team's) on the map for school security. Plus, I will be rich. LOL. I always wanted to say that. Last, but definitely not least, I found God in all the mess I called my life. That has been the saving grace for me and forced me to review all the wrongs I have caused in times past (hence, the apology to C. Santiago and family). I had always had dreams even after there was no way they would ever happen. Sniffles... Now, I serve God, my family and my second (and last) wife whom I've been with for over 4 years. If I ever have to go through what I went through the first time... I'll stay by myself. LOL. Anyways, that is a synopsis of what I've done with myself over the course of graduation until now. Wow, I thought I could fill up a book with all the stuff I've experienced. Hmmm, nah... I like the short version better. Makes me smile a little bit.
