Ralph's Story
After graduation I attended the old Carteret Tech for almost a year and then I moved to Rocky Mount, NC. While living there I worked in Quality Control for Phillips Fibers on Atlantic Ave for 2 years. Then in 1975 I commuted over to Wilson, NC and worked at Firestone Tire and Rubber for 10 months. Building tires was not for me so I moved back to Cedar Island in 1976 (for about 4 months) and worked at Sailor Snug Harbor over in SeaLevel, NC.... After living in Rocky Mount, life on Cedar Island was just too hum-drum and I moved to Knightdale, NC (just outside of Raleigh on hwy. 64) While living there I had a variety of jobs which included working in retail and selling insurance in the Raleigh area. Finally, I found myself.....and in 1979, I got a job that I dearly loved at Southern Bell. While living there I met the love of my life in 1982. To avoid a possible layoff in 1983, I transferred to Norcross, Ga., which is just north of Atlanta. When the government broke up the old Bell System in 1...Expand for more
984, the office in which I was working became a part of AT&T. That office closed in 1989 and I transferred to Athens, Ga. and worked in that location until 2003 when that office closed and I retired at age 49. My partner's health was declining and we sold our home in Ga. and once again moved back to Cedar Island, NC. After a year I was totally bored and in late 2004 I went to work at Taylor Extended Care in SeaLevel, NC. While there I had a chance for career advancement and took a job once again at Snug Harbor!! While working in Assisted Living, I became a Medication Aide and realized how much I enjoy working with elderly people. But once again, the call of "city life" and a family need from my partner's mother and sister called upon me and in 2009 we moved to Matthews, NC (just ouside of Charlotte, NC) to be nearer to them..... But, I am sure "Down East" will be calling me home again in the not so distant future.... But I don't think I'll live on Cedar Island next time we move!!! LOL!!!
