Ralph's Story

April 2019. To not get old I am caregiver to 90 year old severe dementia patient and basically father to my 8 year old grand-daughter. Not much time left for social or other. That is okay since I burned the candle so hard for too many years. I went to Maryland University right after High School graduation. Started in Physical Education to become a coach and changed to a Business and Public Administration degree (BS). Married Dianne Harmon three days after I turned 19; she was 17. We had children in 64, 67, 70 (twins). Moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa upon college graduation (1966)- a disaster for Dianne and Me. The town and people were great but I gave into my lusts and our marriage went down hill after that. Dianne is a fantastic person and I still love her. My fault for the divorce almost completely. I could not handle not living with my kids and being torn between two women I loved. Accordingly, I turned to drugs and drinking to mask the pain. In high school and until age 26, I was not a drinker or drugger. Boy did I make up for those missed years. Spent the next 18 years drinking and druggin every day. (If you attended our 10th and 20th re-unions, your probably know how messed up I was). I was successful in every job I took on but gave them up due to my dysfunction with drinking and drugs. Became a very good golfer in the 70's, partied almost to my death, was a sick gambler, and such a dysfunctional parent (I am sorry kids). My young son almost went to jail for following in my footsteps with drinking and drugging. To help him stop I agreed to stop abusing alcohol and drugs if he would. I have been sober and without drugs for 18 years now. By the grace of GOD, Dianne was the major positive force in my first four kids lives. They are beautiful and successful people. I love them dearly. In 1982 I became coach of a Women's 18 and over soccer team. Gail, my 2nd wife, placed an ad in Washingtonian Magazine indicating she played soccer and referred to herself as the "Tap Lady". I fi...Expand for more
gured I knew enough about drinking to mesh with her interests (Only kidding. She tap danced on Broadway and I tap danced as a kid) and I offered for her to try out for our team. To this day She was the best women's goal keeper I have ever seen. Our team played at the highest level of Women's soccer in the 80's. We had George Mason players and International team players play on our team. That was fun. Gail and I married in 1987. Nichole was born in 1990. Gail and I had up to four soccer teams at one time. When Nichole was born, our soccer stopped for 6 years. Then we coached youth teams that Nichole played on. Our life became Nichole playing soccer and becoming a 3rd Degree Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do at age 14. In 2003 my mental illnesses caught up with me. I made some terrible choices and spent 5 years in prison. I have been out since 12-15-08. On 9-29-03 I was told to turn myself in to go to jail and prison time. I hurt everyone I loved and decided I would rather end their pain I caused. I committed suicide. I say committed because my spirit left my body and the LORD came to me and said, "We are not ready for you, we have more yet for you to do". Absolutely the most wonderful experience of my life. Indescribable just as Apostle Paul said. That night changed my person. I was regenerated into a person I had not known before. For the first time in my life I knew peace and joy. All the anger and hate of 61 years was taken from me. (Anger and hate from childhood experiences.) My 5 years in prison were spent studying Christianity, World religions, and Psychological Therapies. The most beneficial 5 years of my life to continue my path of sanctification in Christ. I feel I was called to help minimize child abuse of all types. I am editing my 200 page book "Child Abuse and Hope". It will be published around December 2010. My next book will include childhood sexual abuse histories of men and women and the negative impact of that abuse. That is my story. GOD Bless. In Christ Jesus, Ralph
