Randall's Story

Workplace After retiring from the Navy, I worked for 5 different electrical contractors. That turned out to be pretty unsteady work, and the hassle of looking for a new job every couple months got old real fast. I then went to work in a small family owned shipyard in Norfolk, VA. Every day there was challenge to see if we could make it out alive. Truely an invigorating environment to work in. I currently work for an Alaskan Native Corporation called Amee Bay, LLC in Norfolk, VA. I started out as a marine electrician, then quickly became a Project Manager, then ran our office for a couple years, and now I'm the Planning and Estimating Program Manager. Not really sure if that was a move up or sideways. Our office has grown from 17 to 90 people, and the work is coming in so fast we can barely keep up with it. I don't travel nearly as much as a Program Manager, barely at all actually, but as a field technician, we got to travel the world repairing Navy ships. While I was in the Navy, all of my travel was in Europe. Since then, I've gone the other direction and seen a lot in the Pacific. I spent a lot of time in San Diego, on Oahu, Korea and Japan, and occasionally back to Washington state. I've landed on, and been shot off of an aircraft carrier. All the fun stuff people pay good money for. In the Navy we had a saying for things like that - "all this and a paycheck too". A couple years ago, I decided that I might as well start planning for what I wanted to do when I retired. I definately don't want to stay in this business until I drop over. I'm kind of obsessed with golf, so I thought that might be something I could do when I get "older". I really wanted to get out on the Champi...Expand for more
ons Tour, but one needs time to practice. Anyway, I went to Myrtle Beach and got certified to teach golf. So, that, and spend time with my wife and grandson, is what I do in what little spare time I actally have. Military Directly after high school, I left for the Navy. I attended Electricians Mate "A" school in Great Lakes, IL. From there I spent 3.5 years in Gaeta, Italy. Absolutely LOVED it there. It's a quaint little fishing town (I got to go back last year on business and it hasn't changed much). We sailed all over the Mediterranean Sea and assisted in the relief of Grenada, and we were the first US warship through the Suez Canal when they reopened it. After Gaeta, I spent 10 months in New London, CT. From there, 2.5 years in Portland, OR on shore duty. That was my first taste of standing in front of a crowd teaching. I was sweating so bad I had people in the front row handing me kleenex to wipe it away. I was still a little shy back then, luckily that didn't last too long. To this day, I love to be in front of people teaching. Pretty wierd how things work out. When I left Portland, I headed back to New London CT for Submarine training. 8 of the next 11 years were spent looking at places from a periscope. The other 3 were spent at Submarine Training Facility where I was an instructor teaching people how to operate submarines and how to respond to different casualties that could easily sink a ship. I've been a lot of places, but the trip that was the most fun was to the North Pole. On that trip, we went around the world in 5 minutes, surfaced through the ice, and played football on the North Pole. I retired in 1994 and have been living in Virginia Beach, VA ever since.
