Randall's Story

Yes, I'm still alive and consider my life a success. Rather than ramble on about my personal life like so many do on 'oh so many' Face Book pages I would rather reminisce about life back then... Memories- Lava Bears! Cinnamon rolls in the cafeteria at 10-cents a piece; I used to eat myself silly. They smelled so good on cold mornings when I came in from the snow (I always had a pocket full of dimes or pennies). The only school I ever attended where you could come in before class and buy warm food in the cafeteria. Wonderful perk for students! Pat (Patricia) Elliott- English Lit. This woman was a remarkable teacher and a mentor for me. Kind, understanding, and a consummate student educator. Thank you Mrs. Elliott! As a testament to her influence she helped me discover a talent for writing. I have recently published my first novel- 'The Jack & Helen Frye Story- the Camelot Years of TWA' (available on line). Second book started already. Sherry Christofferson- Drama What a delightful teacher she was, encouraging, nurturing, caring, with a fun personality! Friend to many and well-remembered-- I'm sure. Because of my unorthodox home-life (yes, we all had one of those) I don't expect many to remember me, this in addition to the fact that I worked all the time. But, my years at Bend Senior High were definitely some of the happiest of my academic education. The people I met there are remembered fondly. *Fun Times: *'Oklahoma'. Every time I watch that movie I have great memories of how much fun it was as a HS production. Field Trips: Somewhere I have photos of a Lava Butte field trip and the annual Haunted House. Remember Portland University field trip and hanging' on Broadway and downtown Portland- still have the motel brochure. Remember the 'melodrama' we did south of town (dinner theatre-like) with popcorn? Fun! Purple Ski Bus *Does anyone remembe...Expand for more
r the 'big purple' ski bus? (Bend had an unusual amount of absentee students in the winters- students who were really just skipping school to go skiing all day at Mt Bachelor!) Schools: *I attended part of grade school and high school in Bend to include Yew Lane (2nd Grade), and the (then new) Pilot Butte Elementary school (1967) 3rd Grade. Loved that school because it was brand new! (Some delinquent tried to burn down Yew Lane so we were transferred to Kingston in 1967) a much more conventional school. (Yew Lane was a Quonset hut, now it is an administration building for Bend School District). *Living in Bend was a wonderful experience. I spent many happy afternoons riding my 10-speed through Drake Park and all over Bend (a bike which I won in a 'count the beans' contest at the Bend Safeway Mall). I will never forget the early on (1966-67) family picnics at Juniper Park (also did swimming lessons there). More fun at Pioneer Park and Tumalo Park! Those were great days. Remember art lessons summer of 1966 at Bend Senior High. Fun Bus Drivers: One memorable song (forgotten by many I'm sure) was heard on the way home from Bend Senior High (September of 1974) on the bus. It was called 'Beach Baby' by First Class, I'll never forget that moment and where I was. Somehow it has always reminded me of Bend and the Deschutes, summer fun, and riding the bus to and from school! We had the coolest bus driver, a hippy-type who would tune in the local rock station (KBND?) and 'turn it up' full blast for the students. What a Guy! In all the school buses I rode this was the first one that had factory speakers- front to back. Cool Ride! Bend is still a beautiful place and if it wasn't so isolated and cold in the winter I would move back. Instead, I visit from the Southwest, a region I have resided since 1987 (Sedona-Santa Fe-Tucson-Alpine-Sedona-Santa Fe) GO LAVA BEARS!
