Randall's Story
Life: for sure the years in Burnsville, 1961-1968 seem far away and indeed are, geographically to say the least.
After receiving a music degree at the U of Iowa, I have lived in Europe since 1972 for professional and study reasons, first in Iceland, then Vienna, Austria, finally Berlin,Germany. I became a professional musician in 1972, engaged as a double bassist in Rekjavík for a season 1972-73. Continued study in Vienna brought me an engagement with the Austrian Radio Orchestra in 1975. In Vienna, I met my wife Myrna, born in Venezuela, raised in Switzerland, she was a violinist and vivacious lady. We were married in 1974. In 1976 we moved to Berlin,Germany, me as principal bassist of the Berlin Symphony (Berliner Symphoniker), Myrna as a violinist with the Radio Symphony Orchestra of Berlin(now DSO). We have a 33 yr old son who received his M.A. in "Intercultural Communication and Media Studies" who lives again (after Paris,Shanghai, Istanbul,Sofia, Nice and Basel)in Berlin and wrote pop music reviews ...Expand for more
for a new magazine called PROUD. Meanwhile, he lives in Istanbul, Turkey. Does translations for CD booklets and a newsletter for Warner Brothers Entertainment. 2000-2008, I spent my summers at the Colorado Music Festival in Boulder. I adore Berlin and Europe in general: languages, incredible music, travel, art, music and culture and cuisine. I have had a great life except for the demise of my orchestra in Berlin in 2004 and the loss of my beautiful wife to cancer in 2006.
Since March 2006 I am principal bassist with the Northwest German Philharmonic (Nordwestdeutsche Philharmonie) which is in the city of Herford, about 400 km west of Berlin I still have a home in Berlin, but live mostly in Herford. Every summer I was a member of the Colorado Music Festival in Boulder, CO, but now to have a vacation like normal people, I have resigned my post there. For sure, I will spend the rest of my days in Europe.....now in early retirement since 2014, once again in Berlin, but still active as a free lance musician.
