Randell's Story
12 OCT 2010
Another four years have come and gone since I wrote âÂÂmy storyâ below . Not much has changed. I am still in Arizona, still working too much, got hammered by the Great Recession but surviving. Not even sure why I am writing this; itâÂÂs late. The people I seem to remember the most were either a year ahead of me or year behind me at FCHS and I have not kept up with anyone from those days. I see the names of people in these lists that I once knew and who once knew me. I am sure they have changed and moved on with their lives. I have not really reached out to anyone from the old days not because I donâÂÂt remember but more because I have so little free time. I became one of those âÂÂType Aâ people you read about. But I am not complaining, I really do enjoy my job and my lfie. I donâÂÂt have time for Facebook and Twitter but I am on LinkedIn. If anyone really wants to reach out to me I can be found at LinkedIn under randellsmith. Time to call it a night.

Life
It's been a long time since I have thought about First Colonial High School. I was at FCHS as the 60's drew to a close and 70's were only beginning to take shape. FCHS was only a year old when I walked through the doors in 1968; everything w...Expand for more
as new and exciting. It was a time of tremendous social change and great music (Hendrix, The Doors, The Cream, Peter, Paul and Mary, etc.). I have fond memories of First Colonial -- Mrs. Sampson's US History class; CAPT Hood's Physics class, Mrs. Jones Government Class and Mrs. Blanchard's Senior English class. I remember the first Earth Day and hearing about the shootings at Kent State and a thing called Woodstock which was too far a way to get to. My only regret is that I did not keep in contact with former friends and classmates. I also wish I had the courage at the time to ask out several girls I had a crush on. Such is life...
After FCHS I attended UVA for the next four years before recieving my commission as a Naval Officer. I spent 10 years in the Navy; mostly in the Far East before getting out and joined the Reserves. Following 9/11/2001, I was recalled to active duty and spent the last 5 years of my naval career in D.C. As much as I enjoyed growing up in Virginia Beach, I fell in love with the West and have lived in Arizona for almost 20 years. I retired from the Navy last year and now work for the City of Phoenix. That's a very brief bio but my story is still being written every day. If anyone wants to chat about FCHS or anything else, just email me (I reply to all email except SPAM).
