Randy's Story

I remember fondly the days of attending Coronado Beach Elementary starting with 2nd grade. The playground, my friends, and all the great times we shared. Remember Watermelon Day?! Wasn't that great?! Once a year, our principal Mr. Orbaugh, hired a farmer to come in with his truck and give watermelon to everyone. You could go back for seconds, and I did! Then there was high school. Ah yes. The memories of the football games. It seemed like the whole city showed up for the games. We had a great team. Friday Night lights. I'll never forget. Unfortunately, I didn't get to graduate with you due to moving to California in 1982 for family reasons. I did however graduate. Shocking to most of you I know. Now I live in California. Los Angeles to be exact, but I do vacation in New Smyrna and love it. I will retire there for sure. I spent 6 months there last year fishing, crabbing, shrimping and BBQ'ing at Manatee Park. My parents bought condo's in the 70's, so we are deeply rooted in New Smyrna. I am a Financial Advisor now and help people who are retiring to roll their company 401k's into Income for Life annuities. In my spare time I am a writer, which is my true calling. A darn good one actually. I've got a children's book series going. "Pad...Expand for more
dles eco-adventures". It's a story line about a cute little yellow duck who travels around the world seeking new adventures. Along the way, Paddles meet endangered species and also comes across Mayan ruins and things of that nature that educate the reader about our world and how we can help protect it. I also have a novel going called "Spirit Lake" which is based on a true story. There was a young man and a young girl who fell in love in Northern Idaho in the 1800's. They were from different warring indian tribes though, so great difficulties ensued and their love was forbidden. It's a trajic love story that doesn't have a good ending. In the end, when love could not win out, and with the murder of the girl who's body was later thrown into a freezing lake as a sign of the war and that one tribe would never accept the other, the young man committed suicide by jumping into the freezing iced lake as well. It's a true American story, and one that I feel compelled to write. As a writer, we see stories that must be told. They will either be told or lost forever. I believe the story of Spirit Lake deserves a place in our history books. I've actually been to Spirit Lake, and I can tell you the northern Idaho wilderness is beautiful and magnificent.
