Randy's Story
Life
Hey, you must be pretty bored if you are reading my bio. Ha-ha.
Those that knew me way back when, will know that
I lived in Brooklyn for a long time and then moved
to Connecticut in 1977. I always loved Arizona, mostly
because of my friends Chuck and Tom, but I ended up
moving north instead of west. One day I'll move to
Arizona or New Mexico and enjoy warm weather all
year 'round. I won't miss snow, that's for sure.
I've had a fun and diverse career since graduating from
Lincoln HS and then the School of Visual Arts in NYC. I
Worked in photography, film and A/V production, to
name a few paths I've taken. I also worked as a
journalist, writing a jazz column for awhile, and as a
creative copywriter in advertising and marketing. Also
did some technical writing, but it was a bit too tedious
for my taste. During all of this variety, I continued to
play drums, which I started playing when I was about
age 10. I still remember...Expand for more
my mother yelling, "cut out
that noise!" I'm glad I didn't listen.
After experiencing some jobs in different areas of the
music business (performing, composing, publicity,
lighting, sound, etc.), mostly short term, or in my spare
time during other careers, I finally decided to make
this my life's work when I turned 50, a little more than
five years ago.
All I can say is, why did I wait so long? I now play
drums and percussion in two bands, teach private
lessons and workshops, but mostly I facilitate group
drumming programs and drum circles. I guess all that
drumming I did, on and under the boardwalk, as well
as in Prospect Park, finally paid off. Who'd a thunk it?
And now, I'm happy to say, I love my work.
Sometimes I miss Brooklyn, but I go visit every year
for a Nathan's hot dog or pizza at Lento's. I think Mrs.
Stahl's is gone. Too bad. I'll miss those knishes.
Well, that's enough for now. Be well, old friends.
