Randy's Story

WOW!!! Next year will be 30 years since we graduated. OMG!!! Unbelievable!!! Reflecting back on life you have to wonder where it all went. And why so freakin fast. Is it just me or has this last 30 years just flown by? I mean, my God, can you believe that in just another very short 8 years we all qualify for senior discounts? OMG!!! How sad is that? And let's not even mention the technology advancements. Ok, what the hell, we will. Computers... all we knew about computers was, well let's just say the iPhone in my pocket today would have required a 1000 SF room to hold the same information, maybe more. Did the word gigabite even exist then? Speaking of iPhone how about music? Yes music has evolved but not as much as the media to play music. Let's see we've gone from vinyl to reel to reel tape to 8-Track to cassette to CD's to digital. What's next... virtual? Hologram? Now what about going from a transister radio to a boom box to satellite radio? We won't even discuss the VHS & Beta to DVD evolution, oh wait there's that new one now called Blu-Ray. And as for GPS? Well who would have ever thought our cars would tell us where to go. And as for communication... let's see rotary dial to push button to cell phones. Anyone remember pagers? So when you think about that cell phone in your hand, you're carrying a pay phone, a computer, a boom box, a camera and a video camera all in the palm of your hand. Oh wait and also about 500 albums, cassettes or CD's. Amazing!! And then there's the internet & email. When was the last time anyone actually sat down and hand wrote a letter, placed it in an envelope, placed a stamp on it and mailed it? I honestly can't remember. In this age of digital I don't even know if I remember how to write. I type EVERYTHING on some sort of keyboard whether it's my computer or my phone. Pretty sad. I couldn't even tell you how much a stamp is today. I do EVERYTHING online. We won't even discuss the cultural changes in our society over the past 30 years or the economy or environment or politics or religion or world affairs. Too many to list. Now as for me personally. First off I am happy to have survived this long. I know some of us have not been as fortunate and that saddens me. I am SO sorry. Well 3 days after we graduated I packed my car and moved bac...Expand for more
k to California. Been here ever since. I currently live in Rancho Cucamonga about 3 miles from where I went to junior high and about 10 miles from where I was born. Pretty sad, eh? I got married in May of 1983. The woman (I'm being nice here) I married had a 3 year old daughter from her 2nd marriage (She's now 29). Yeah I was her third. HELLO??? What the hell was I thinking. Anyway, we had a son together in 1984 (He's now 25). We got divorced in 1997. She has since married her 4th husband and I have yet to get married again. My son lives in Santa Monica and is a Steadi-cam operator in the movie business. He graduated from film school in 2007. He's still getting started in the business but has shot quite a few music videos. He recently shot the entire Chris Cornell video for his song "Long Gone". He shot the LAX time lapse in the opening credits of the Starz series "Crash". I am SO proud of him you couldn't even imagine!!! My step-daughter (ex-wifes daughter from previous marriage) JUST started Law School and is working for my business partner's wife (she's an attorney) part time. As for my professional life, I started working for a company in Chino when I was 18 (1980) and worked my way up to Plant Manager the last 8 years I was there. Left there when I was 38 (2000). Took 6 months off before going back to work as Operations Manager for a company in Huntington Beach. Was laid off from there 3 years later. Worked construction for a friend of mine for about 18 months. Then started working as General Manager for a company in Ontario until they closed their doors in the summer of 2006. Went right to work as Business Unit Manager for a company in Fontana. Quit there in 2007 to work for myself. I now own a construction company in Rancho Cucamonga. Well that sums up my last almost 30 years. Yeah I've had my share of highs and lows during that time as I'm sure we all have. But I'm happy I'm alive (WOO HOO) and have my health. Not sure if I'm lucky or stupid but I haven't seen a doctor since my appendix ruptured in 1983. Okay I'm done. I'll stop boring those of you that took the time to read all of this. And sorry but I can't give you back the 5 minutes of your life you spent reading this. Everyone be safe!! Try to be happy!!! And I hope to see ALL of you at our reunion next year!!!
