Workplace
After retiring from the Coast Guard in 2000, I started working for the University of Alaska Southeast in Sitka AK. I worked in the Distance Education Dept that coordinated the teleconferences, satellite, and on-line courses between the instructors and the students. I also taught a couple of classes on aircraft mechanics/FAA aircraft & powerplant certificates. With the exception of teaching classes, I found the work very boring and the pay was not very good. In early 2002 I returned to the Coast Guard, this time as a civilian employee at the Coast Guard Air Station in Sitka. I was hired to run the aircraft computer maintenance system. Coast Guard career and so was very familiar with it. The job was not very challenging, but I enjoyed being around the aircraft and coasties again. The pay was better then what I had been earning at the university. Shortly after being hired by the Coast Guard (a month later) the FAA called and asked if I would go to work for them at the Flight Service Station in Sitka. I accepted the offer and in Aug of 2002 found myself attending 3 ½ months of school in Oklahoma City. After completion of that, I reported to the FSS in Sitka to begin my OJT for certification. In Sept of 2003 I was fully certified. I am enjoying my second career with the FAA, but look forward to fully retiring in a few years.
