Randy's Story
I'm currently disabled, as a result of spinal injuries suffered in an auto accident in March of 2001. Since then, I continue to recuperate from a series of surgeries and pain management procedures; I do what I can when I'm able - and rest when I'm not. I'm currently in a holding pattern, awaiting new pain management options - and have been told that further surgery is not currently an option, though that could change at anytime. So, I bide my time - hoping for new procedures that might reduce my daily pain level, and some semblance of the life I once had.
Since I spend virtually every waking hour at home, I spend a lot of time reading, watching TV, and online - aswering e-mails, shopping, following current events, and working on my website (which is currently being rebuilt).
I'd love to hear from anyone and everyone interested in catching up - especially since I didn't have the opportunity to speak much with those who attended our thirtieth reunion.
I always wanted to be a Marine when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a terrific idea. As it turns out, they were right. And as a 3rd generation Marine, I wear the title proudly - though my service was cut short (twice) by (once again) lower back trouble. But I'm grateful for the years I was able to spend in uniform, and hold all who've done so - past or present - in high esteem.
My father, long gone now, is my greatest hero, because he always believed in me, never doubted me, and always wanted me to follow my heart and be my own man - without any preconceived notions about who or what he though I should be. It was his belief in me that gave me the courage to leave all that I'd known and move halfway across the country.
I moved from Mansfield to Denver in June of 1981 in search of more than what was available to me in Mansfield - and because I felt the need to go somewhere so far removed from what I was accustomed to, in order to free myself from the stagnant mindset that I had allowed to hold me back for far too long. Here I've met and married the love of my life, earned both a bachelor's (History/English) and masters degree (Am. Military History), and finally came into my own.
I've become heavily involved in politics/current events on both a local and national level. And I spend a great deal of time - when able - collecting & restoring vintage guitars, drums, and vintage military rifles - as well as maintaining and improving upon my marksmanship skills in 3-gun and high power service rifle competition. As well as playing my drums when I’m able. None of it has been easy of late, however, as the injuries sustained in my auto accident proved to be so severe - and have continued to deteriorate so rapidly, with no viable solution in sight. Even after a series of spinal surgeries - neck and lower back - I'm still on the road to reco...Expand for more
very, having had my latest spinal surgery in February 2016. It's been a success, all things considered, though the recovery has proven to be both difficult and confusing.
If I won $100 million, I'd spend some of it to assure that my wife and I - and our extended family - were debt free, and a bit more on seeking better medical care in hopes of improving my health, and aquiring a better home (with an inpregnable security system) on perhaps a hundred acres in the southwest. The remainder I'd give to the Marine Recon Foundation, as they more than any other charity do more to provide for our men & women in uniform in need.
Having done those things, my wife Maggie and I could live out our lives in peace, knowing we'd done all we could for those who mean the most to us.
As for my accomplishments, nothing much to tell.. A couple of trophies from Dragway 42 in Norwalk, OH. Two softball championship trophies from a Denver league. Three shooting trophies from service rifle competitions. And a plaque commemorating the founding of McBrayer Field at Metro State College, where I founded the club football team in 1984. And an Honorable Discharge from my beloved Marine Corps. A B.A. in American History and an M.A. in American Mikitary History. Not much - but it'll do.
If I could change anything, I would choose to not be on that road on the day that my auto accident occurred on March 29th, 2001 - and set my life on a path I never imagined much less planned for. And I'd make it possible for Maggie and I to have children - my greatest regret - if only for the sake of my beloved parents who so looked forward to having grandkids. But it just wasn't meant to be.
But I've come a long way from stocking shelves part-time at Quik Chek my freshman year (at $1.35/hr) to an M.A. - so life is good - though when I need to relax because my frustrations get the best of me - these days a result of the boredom and frustration associated with my spinal injuries - I do so via escapism through music (playing & listening), reading historical and military intrigue novels, and the power of prayer. And, more importantly, I simply remind myself just how far I've come, and just how fortunate I am to have so much.
Has it been a perfect life? Hardly. But then, who's is? But there aren't REALLY many things I'd change - take back a few harsh words, remember some important things I let slide, listen to that "little voice" inside me more often; and tell my parents I loved them more often than I did, and show them my appreciation more than I did. For Mom & Dad are gone now, and I can't help but feel I short-changed them by taking too much for granted - and I'll never get the chance to make it up to them. So my wife is the now most important being on the planet to me. Nothing else compares. More than life itself - she makes my life worth living.
