Randy's Story
Military
The 548th, I think it was a squadron at the time, was my first assignment fresh out of technical school at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. It was certainly interesting arriving there in late January 1968. The weather was of course tropical and warm.
One of my favorite early memories there was a trip I took with my buddies around the island in early VW bug that belonged to Lawrence Winer. I think Louis Colucci and Steve Troncone were on the trip also. At the time there was a...Expand for more
bout 6 miles around the Northwest tip of the island where the road was unimproved. Every time that VW would get stuck we would get out and lift it out of the hole and be on our way. It was great cleaning off in the warm waves of the Pacific when we arrived at a deserted beach after going across the entire unimproved part of the "road".
I was stationed at Hickam until the end of January 1971. I worked on the drafting of Air Force Charts. I mostly did "stick up" and peel cotes.
