Randy's Story

7 Aug 2015 After Ganesha High, I worked as a welder at a trailer hitch company and in late October 1970 received a letter from the US Government. The letter started.... Greetings, you have been selected by your friends and neighbors to serve in the armed forces of the United States of America. Yes, I had been drafted! After induction at Ft. Ord, and Basic training, It was determined that my strongest skills were best used in the signal corps. After a stint in Vietnam I left the Army only to re-enlist a year and a half later. I was able to choose my career upon re-enlistment and chose aviation, specifically helicopters. I spent three years in Fulda, Germany from May 1979 to May 1981 working on and flying in scout helicopters along the East German border fence, guarding the frontier of freedom. Although it is forbidden by regulations, our pilots allowed the crewchief to fly the aircraft occasionally. The East German border troops were known to crack a shot off at our helicopters once in a while, and if the pilot were to be hit by rifle fire, he wanted to know that the crewchief could either land the helicopter or fly it back to base. Yes, we flew that close to the border fence! When my tour in Germany ended I was assigned to a direct support aviation unit at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, (I'm still here living in Fayetteville). A year after arriving at Ft. Bragg, I met the love of my life and married, moving from the barracks to a 3 bedroom ranch style house on 7/8 of an acre. A highlight of my 7 year tour with the direct support unit was a one month tour in Egypt (I had been promoted to Sergeant by then, and had progressed from aircraft mechanic to Technical Inspector) putting on a firepower exercise for the Egyptians. We did get one day to tour Cairo and th...Expand for more
e pyramid of Cheops and the Sphynx. I was settled in at the house when I received orders sending me on a one year unaccompanied tour to Korea, 1988 -1989 where I worked as a Technical Inspector on the Army's scout aircraft (OH-58A) and the UH-1H (Huey) medium lift helicopter, (that's the helicopter you always see in the Vietnam war movies that soldiers are being transported in. 1989 - 1993 Back to Fort Bragg.. I was chosen to be a technical inspector for a newly formed special operations unit flying in the Persian Gulf, (Before Desert Storm). The OH-58A Helicopter had been upgraded from a passenger and scout aircraft to a gunship. It took two rated pilots to fly the aircraft, and I only got to ride in it once. We had re-flagged all of the civilian shipping coming and going into and out of the Persian Gulf because Iran was sending small gunboats from Farsi Island to shoot up the civilian cargo ships. Our mission was to fly from two barges in the Gulf or two Navy ships and destroy the small Iranian gunboats when we were called upon. Tom Brokaw reported on our mission, and you can see the report if you type "TF118" in your web browser URL window. I retired from the Army and went to the University of North Carolina at Fayetteville. Graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science. Worked for Lockheed Martin on Simmons Army Airfield (Fort Bragg) for 13 years as a technical inspector inspecting repairs on helicopters coming back from the Persian Gulf region (Iraq & Afghanistan). As we withdrew from Iraq and Afganistan fewer aircraft were being used and the contractor laid off half of the workers on the airfield... I was one of the unlucky ones. I'm now semi-retired working at a golf course on Fort Bragg, and enjoying my life with my better half.
